Thread: Who was James Joseph Victory's 1st. wife.

Can you please help me find the 1st marriage of James Joseph Victory. James Joseph was born abt. 1820. Place could be Middlesex (London area) or Ireland.



I have a wedding cert. for him and his 2nd Wife Caroline Prebble married in St. Clements Danes, Middlesex (London) on 18th. October 1849. The cert. states James Joseph was a widower.



I have searched many sites with out success for James' 1st wife....could you have better luck than I...I do hope so



I don't know if this could be relevant, but James Joseph Father , also named James Victory was born in Ireland abt. 1798.

There are three James Victory's on the IGI -



27.6.1841 marriage to Susannah Smith St. Anne Soho, Westminster



5.3.1838 marriage to Margaret Fitzgerald St. Leonard's Shoreditch and



Caroline Prebble who you know about.



Did James have any children with his first wife that you know of? Also what was his occupation?



I will have a look for him on the 1841 census.

I have not been able to find him on the 1841 census. But I have found a death on the free bmd for a Margaret Victory 1847 December quarter Pancras Vol 1 page 396 - could this be Margaret Fitzgerald? Hope this helps.

A big thumbs up and lots of smiles for I am so grateful for your help and I think you may have something in Margaret Fitzgerald being the Ist wife. I'll have a dig around and see if I can come up with anything...wish me luck.



I did a check for deaths on Susannah Victory. The only one I found was for a Susan Victory - Lambeth- vol.4 Page 197 Sept. quarter 1844. ( could Susannah have been registered as Susan)? if so, then I'm still left with the question who's who, but I feel quite strongly Margaret would be a good choice to research.



I don't know if James Joseph and his 1st. wife had any children. I do know he had at least 2 children by his second.

James Joseph's occupation was a Boot Closer (same occupation as his Father, James).



Its a shame he cant be found on the 1841 Census...then we could see his wife's name and possible children...it would have made life so much easier.

I think I have found them on the 1841 Census. Would you kindly take a look and let me know what you think.



I'm 99% sure its my James Joseph Victory but the family have been miss-transcribed.



If you look under the 1841 Census for:

Jos Victory b.1812 Ireland

Mary Victory b.1806 Ireland

James Victory b. 1839 Middlesex



The original document states...as my eyes see it.

Jas. Victory 29 Boot Closer

Marg. 35

James 2.



I can't make out the address they are living but it comes under St. James Westminster.



What I think has happened:

James (Joseph) Victory b.1812 wed Margaret Fitzgerald b.1806, they married 5/3/1838-Shoreditch and had a son James b. 1839-middlesex.



Their son James died aged abt 3. in June quarter 1842-St. James Westminster. Vol.1 Page 78



Then Margaret died (as you mentioned) in 1847 aged abt. 41



James Joseph went on to marry Caroline Prebble and they had a son born 1851. and named him James after the 1st Child.



Does any of this make sense to you, or is my brain working over time and I've got it completely wrong?



If you thing I might have some thing...I'll go a head and order some certs. to confirm it so I can add them to my tree.

I have had a look at the 1841 census and it seems very likely this is your James Joseph Victory. The address is Great Windmill St. Westminster.



I think I would get the marriage certificate for Margaret Fitzgerald and James Victory as that would either confirm or not if this was his first wife, especially as you know his occupation.



Also your ideas on what may have happend I think is quite likely, it is not unusual for a child to be named after a dead child, and as it is the father's name even more likely.



Good luck with your search and hope Margaret turns out to be the correct wife.

Thanks for confirming my thoughts...you gave me just the kick start I needed. If you feel like giving me another one, I have an ancestor 'Henry James Mason' on the most wanted forum. He's lot have been eluding me for a couple of years now.



I'll be going to the National Archives in 2 weeks time, hopefully I'll be able to find James Joseph Victory and match it against my theories.

Its The 2nd one down on the most wanted forum. Henry James Mason's Parents.



I already got a birth cert for Henry James, but it was the wrong one.

June 1885. Paddington. St. Mary's. Vol 1a 55 ( transcribed 1a 65) I know this is the wrong cert as the parent on it are George Henry & Emily Eliza Barker.



I have a correct wedding cert.

Dec 1908 Islington. Vol 1b page 642.



Husband: Henry James Mason 23. Journeyman shoemaker. Father James Mason (deceased) Horse dealer.



wife: Florence Julia Cook 20. no occupation stated. Father Joseph Ernest Cook Farm Labourer.



They were actually married on 26th. November 1908.



Witness: Lillian Gibbs and C (or L) Irvine. As Lillian is a lady I guess C/L Irvine is a male.
