Thread: Looking for Birth Place in Yorkshire

I am looking for the birth place of Thomas Wood b. abt 1797 Yorkshire.



On the 1841 census (taken in South Dalton, Yorkshire) states born in county.



On the 1851 census states born (looks like) Eaststone, Yorkshire & on the 1861 census states born Ebstone, Yorkshire.



Does anybody have any idea where this could be?

Many thanks for your reply. I had seen Ebberston before but was unsure. I thought the ennumerator would probably have been local - do you think he would he get the spelling wrong?



To try and confirm Thomas Wood's birth (abt. 1797) would I need to contact the Yorkshire FHS? Or is there another way?



I am in Devon so it would be quite a trip to Yorkshire!

You could purchase a microfiche of the record for around £1.60 - £2.00 depending on the records offices prices. This may also give you names of siblings. All you need to do then is find access to a microfiche reader either at a library or records office nearer to you.

I noticed you have Carpenter's - are they from Kent. I have a Rebecca Carpenter b. 1796 married to Cornelius Woolley - any connection?

To purchase Yorkshire records you will need to contact the main Yorkshire office. You could also try asking if any of the members living in Yorkshire are going to the records office there.



I have had a look on the internet and this service may not apply to all Counties, so will need to be checked.



Sorry, my Carpenter's are mainly in Hampshire with a couple in Wiltshire.

I found your post when I googled 'Ebstone' - trying to solve the same problem as your post - Thomas Wood is my GGGG grandfather - I have lots of info about his descendents - he moved to South Dalton, E Yorks. I still live in Yorkshire so if you need any help looking things up. I had also considered Ebberston - near Pickering, N Yorks as that has links with the Hothams who were also the lords of the manor in South Dalton so that could possibly explain the move but have no proof. I have pm'd you also as that was the first thing I got into when I registered and I was so thrilled to see your query!

Thomas is also my 4xgrandfather. I am descended from his son John.

I have Thomas' wife as Jane Ireland.



I am afraid I have still not solved Thomas' birth place.

I'm not related in any way but looked up the 1851 Census and, familiar as I thought I was to things Yorkshire, could not understand the writing - but would it be EASTBURN - further north from South Dalton and nearer Driffield. It would be a good centre for a blacksmith perhaps?
