Thread: Michael McGrath CONVICT??

I am looking for information on Michael McGrath who went to Australia from Ireland . I cannot find him as a settler but there is one who could be on the convict list.. He was born in Tipperary 1821 and married a Sarah Cosgrove also from Ireland (but not a convict) 27 January 1852 in Melbourne . Were there census around that time in Australia???? What his occupation was I do not know.

My father always said ,his grandfather was a " political deportee " from Ireland.

and came from County Cork,but baptism was in Newport Tipperary. So who do you believe!

Family history can be notoriously wrong. My father thought his father was born in Narrabri but when I started researching I found he was born in Dubbo. If he was a political prisoner he may have been in Cork Prison before coming to Australia and still have been born in Tipperary.



If the one you found is your Michael just in case you don't have the information. He married Sarah Cosgrove in 1852 at St Francis Roman Catholic Church Melbourne. I can only find the births of 3 children Honora b 1853; Patrick b 1858 d 1860; and Michael b 1862. I can find no records for them in Victoria after 1862.

Thanks Kate. I have his marriage cert. They had three more kids after that ,one of them being my Grandfather. I guess that would have been the time Michael went to NZ. I was never sure where child 5 was born in 1864 My Grandfather was one of twins and were born in Dunedin (6 and 7)

I know Michael was on his way back to Victoria when he was run over by a waggon wheel of a runnaway horse on Dunedin wharf. It's the in between bits I am curious about.

Meant to say that although Musters were taken no names were recorded so the Australian Census Records are pretty useless more is the pity.
