    Default Armitage Benjamin and Ben

Holmfirth/Cumberworth W.Riding Yorkshire where the Armitages worked in the woollen mills. Benjamin was probably born abt 1800.

His son was Thomas born 1823 who married Sarah Exley in 1844.

They had a son Ben in 1846 who became a 'woollen carding overlooker' and moved to Bradford in 1870. He was in Bradford in 1881 with his wife and family but is said to have 'gone to America' in the 1880s.

Anyone know what happened to Ben?

His Grandfather Benjamin is one of several Benjamins.

Someone said he was married to Alice but there seems to be more than one

Ben and Alice. Can anyone help with my Bens please?

    Hi Jakalf

The IGI gives Thomas' birth -

Thomas Armitage birth 23 Aug 1823

Christening 18 Sep 1823 Denby Dale Chapel Cumberworth Yorkshire

    parents Benjamin Armitage & Alice

The following are probably members of the same family -

Mary Armitage birth 2 Jun 1817

Christening 6 July 1817 Denby Dale formerly Denby Dikeside Wesleyan parents Benjamin Armitage & Alice Senior

Joshua Armitage birth 7 Jan 1818

Christening 21 Feb 1819 Denby Dale formerly Denby Dikeside Wesleyan Cumberworth Yorkshire parents Benjamin Armitage & Alice Senior

Elizabeth Armitage birth 12 Oct 1820

Christening 16 Nov 1820 Denby Dale formerly Denby Dikeside Wesleyan

parents Benjamin Armitage & Alice Senior

Amia Armitage birth 17 May 1828

Christening 31 Aug 1828 Denby Dale Chapel Cumberworth

James Armitage birth 11 Dec 1833

Christening 2 Mar 1834 Denby Dale formerly Denby Dikeside Wesleyan parents Benjamin Armitage & Alice Senior

There is a marriage 8 July 1816 Silkstone Yorkshire Benjamin Armitage to Alice Senior.

Just a word of caution - it is always wise to check IGI records against original records as they are sometimes inaccurate.

    Hi Jakalf,

Are you familiar with the area? My family name was Armitage, I grew up in the Holme Valley and can tell you that the Armitage surname has it's origins there, it is believed that all Armitages' can be traced back to a family of settlers living at Armitage Bridge Huddersfield. The Holme/Colne valley's, and surrounding areas are awash with Armitages', this makes it difficult to trace them through census records. Also a big majority of workers had jobs in the textile mills meaning it's not easy to trace them by occupation, as most were carders or finishers, weavers etc. However I must stress don't give up, if you are able to, then search the parish registers, and if you do live in the area a visit to Huddersfield Library, or the Wakefield Archives would prove useful.

    Best of luck.

    Hi Slizzy

I realise I am up against it with the Armitage name. I no longer live in Yorkshire but did live there, in Bradford, for twenty years. I have a relative still there who wants to take me to Hinchliffe Mill where they all slubbed and carded. You must know it well.

The missing Ben is my GGGrandfather and he is proving rather difficult.

There may be a lead in the Bradford Archives which we intend to look at.

    Thanks for your interest

    Jack

    Hi Jack,

Do take your relative up, on a visit to Hinchcliffe Mill, it's a beautiful village surrounded by wonderful countryside. My home as a child was in Holmfirth so I know Hinchcliffe Mill very well.

As you said you are up against it with the Armitages' however I have managed to trace mine back to the 1700's.......so with determination it's possible and I've not given up yet in trying to get further back, I need to pay another visit to Huddersfield Library, their resources are fantastic and the library staff are very helpful and friendly.

I will take a look at census etc. for you, and if I find anything I'll get back to you.

    Meanwhile.........good luck with your research.

    Hello again Jack,

There's an Amy Armitage age 13 (could be the Amia Gillian found) and a James A. age 7 (again on Gillian's list) on the 1841 census living with a Broadhead family in Cartworth, which is less than 2miles from Hinchcliffe Mill. I'll keep looking for other members of the family.

And here's James again in 1851. It looks like this is Alice's 2nd marriage, as James is listed as wife's son. Alice was born in Cumberwoth. Ann Eastwood is a married dau. (probably John's dau)

This record from Freebmd looks like Alice and John's marriage. Of course wether or not this is 'your' Alice has to be proved. You really need to find a death record for Benjamin.

This looks like the same James in 1861, interestingly he has a dau. Alice, and son Benjamin. The child Eli in the household is listed as a lodger.....probably a nephew. Ada Mellor is also a lodger.
