    Default Benjamin Howson 1782 - 1847

    Hi Guys

    Needing your help again!!

I am trying to locate Ben on the 1841 Census, hopefully in SHeffield....but could be anywhere..and could be born anywhere

What I DO know is that his son Benjamin was born in yorkshire c 1802/03. The son Ben married Harriet Whitely in sheffield July 1825 in the Parish Church of Sheffield and was "of this parish".

Young Ben was widowed in 1837 and remarried in 1841...aged 38 and gave his father as Benjamin Howson - Grinder

Now i have a burial at St Peters on 31st Dec 1847 for a Benjamin HOWSON -Grinder aged 65 residing at Burgess Street Sheffield, and am presuming (YASE I know I shouldnt presume!! ) that this is young Bens father

BUT I can't find Old Ben on the 1841

I cant find a death reg for young Ben either...but can only find him on the 1841 with his sons lodging at Bailey Street, Sheff and listed as being only 30! lol but his remarriage a few months later lists him as being 38

Hope you can understand me rambles...and hope you can help

    Thanks in advance

Well i didn't put it to bed for long!!

These peeps are really bugging me!

Now I have found the following information....but it's not quite piecing together as I hoped it would do

In the Hallamshire Cutlers index I have found the following:

John, son of Benjamin of Kirkstall Forge a fender Grinder: John was apprenticed to George Whitham, filesmith in 1812.

THEN....after help from another site, Kirkstall Forge has links around the Leeds/Wortley/Barnsley areas..

on the IGI I have found the following Baptisms:

Benjamin 22 Aug 1802 Horsforth, Yorkshire

    Ann 2 Jun 1805 Horsforth

    Sarah 16 Mar 1800 Horsforth

    Mary 13 Sep 1807 Horsforth

Horsforth being in the registration district of Hunslet, which included the area of Kirkstall. All of these children had Benjamin as father ....but no other info.... and John with father as Benjamin is not to be found on IGI..

The Baptism for Benjamin 1802 fits in with his age on 2nd Marriage in 1840.

Witness to Bens 1st marriage in 1825 in Sheffield was a Hannah Howson....

ALthough Ben was listed as "of this parish" of Sheffield...so i presumed () he was born Sheffield, I have since learnt that you only had to reside in the parish for 3 weeks to be " of this parish"

I know that i am clutching at straws again.....and it still doesnt solve the missing census......just thought someone may be able to shed further light on any of the above info

    Thanks in anticipation

    Hi Lozzie,

I've been looking at your Benjamin's again, and something ain't right You have young Ben marrying Mary Hall in 1841, however Freebmd has him marrying in 1840? Here's the ref.

    Marriages Sep 1840 (>99%)HOWSON Benjamin Sheffield 22442

Now if the Freebmd record is correct, and bearing in mind you found young Ben with his 3 sons in 1841, where was Mary, and why wasn't she with Ben and the boys?

Sorry to add to the confusion Loz, but we need to establish facts to get any further.

This Benjamin was a FENDER MAKER in 1861, the years are out though, but maybe there's some connection.

    Hi Slizzy

Young Bens 2nd marriage was in 1840 lol I checked this out at the archives

Mary Hall aged 20 (1841) was listed with her parents on the 1841 Census.....still using her maiden name

Following Charley Hall onto the 1851 Census....Ben & Mary daughter, Elizabeth Howson, was living with her grandparents.

The Benjamin you have found on 1851 & 61, I think he must be from another branch of the Howsons, his age being consistent to 1794, too early for my Ben

Thanks for your time once again

    Loz
