    Default Hackworthy/Voysey

    Hello, it's me again.

I'm really stuck on trying to find out about a James Hackworthy and a Sarah Voysey both born in about 1771.

A while back Slizzy gave me a lot of info on the Hackworthy clan, which really helped. But now It's just impossible for me to go back any further.

The info I have is limited to that blank space in my head, but I do know that they were both born in Devon.

    Any help would be great.

    Thanks a million!

Hmmm. Don't have a Sarah of your vintage on the Voysey tree I am researching, but she would fit in with the other children I have of a James Voysey (b 15 Jan 1731, Rose Ash, Devon) and Hannah Peck. Other children I have are Zachariah/Zechariah (b1770) and Mary (b1767). Whole family of Devon and some later Mawnan, Cornwall.

From what I understand, Voysey is a very unusual name and there are 2 main factions researching. However, the others aren't of Devon as far as we know. Still most likely related somewhere along the line! Just have to find a link.

Zachariah's son John migrated to Australia with all his living children in 1849, so you will find many Aussie researchers - apparently the descendants in Australia, at least of the line I have mentioned, outnumber the Voyseys in the UK now.

    Hope this helps!

Famhistwhiba, this is really interesting! I'll look into this info and see what I can dig up from my side.

    Thanks a lot for that.

Great! Let me know how you go.

Other places of interest other than Rose Ash are Exeter, Bishops Nympton (Lugg).

The Cornwall place of residence was Mawnan.

I know of a Sarah Voysey who was married in December 1832 in Crediton, Devon - but I guess it's not the same one.

Hi Brian. Good news, it could be the same one. My Sarah Voysey married James Hackworthy but I'm not sure of the date.

Voysey is a very common Devon name, and there were loads of them!

My Sarah was born in about 1771, but if she married James in 1832 that would make her 61 years old. Maybe it was Sarah's daughter or grandaughter that married in that year?

    I hope this helps.

Hi Famhistwhiba, sorry it's been ages!

This is what I've managed to find out about my Voysey's so far:

John Voysey was my GGGGG Grandfather born in Devon in about 1746. I've no idea who it was he married, but they had my GGGG Grandmother, Sarah Voysey in about 1771.

She married my GGGG Grandfather, James Hackworthy and they had my GGG Grandfather, William Hackworthy.

William married Joan Jarred, 1805-1846, and had my GG Grandfather William Hackworthy in 1831.

He married my GG Granny, Fanny Ford born 1839, and had my Great Granny, Mary- Ann Hackworthy in 1867.

She married my Great Grandfather, Noah Hughes born 1859, anf they had my Granny, Sarah, in 1909.

I've just looked back over this and it seems confusing! Please let me know if you don't understand it and I'll try and decipher it!

I'm not sure about the Cornish side of the family, as far as I was aware they were all Devon.

I still can't believe that I've managed to go as far back as my great, great, great, great, great grandfather,

I hope this all helps some in trying to find your rellies.

No, it's definitely not the same one then, but as you say could well be a daughter or a grand daughter - or some relative.

    > Voysey is a very common Devon name

Is it, or isn't it ?

    Best wishes,

    Brian
