Default Henry GADD, Birdham, West Sussex, circ 1790

Hello everyone, grammabee here-- Happy New Year and Successful "sleuthing" to all!

I am searching for Gadd families in West Sussex and area.

    problem ancestor is --

Henry Gadd, born ca 1790, maybe in Birdham or Bosham.

he married Mercy Sexton,22/02/1814 in Bosham West Sussex. She was ch. 16/07/1791-Boshamn, West Sussex , dau. of Richard Sexton and his second wife Ruth Pope

Have Mercy's family back to very early 1700's.

Have Henry and Mercy's descendancy almost complete right to the present day. Henry and Mercy's son , <Captain> Henry Gadd, is my 2xgreat grandfather.

What I am needing to find and I am requesting help for --is---

the birth record for Henry Gadd who married Mercy.

A marriage licence was issued at the Archdeaconry of Chichester

on the same day he married Mercy. This records him as a bachelor farmer

    of Birdham.

But apparently there is no other information forthcoming-- grrrr-- LOL

I would so much like to find Henry's birth date as well as his parents names, to hopefully trace him back to another Henry Gadd who married a Martha Smith on 11 Jan 1699, or to Henry Gadd -ch.2 Aug. 1714, married to Mary Hammond , on 27 Feb 1741.

I have been all over this site--

    http://www.westsussexpast.org.uk/searchonline/Index.htm

and get very excited when I see all the Gadd references, but cannot make a connection--

I am open to all suggestions and gratefully say thank you for it.

    Dear Grammabee,

I am not sure whether you have had any replies to this enquiry. I have done quite a lot of work on the Gadd family and I think that Henry is probably the son of William Gadd, farmer of Birdham and Elizabeth Restall. There are other children in this family who are not on the IGI such as their daughter Elizabeth who appears in the Sussex marriage index.

Kate Gadd who married my relative George Cosens was a witness at the marriage of Henry and Mercy and it is quite likely that she was living in Birdham with her cousins. William's family, at the time. Another of her sisters married the miller at Birdham. This family lived at Graffham which is 12 miles inland and life would have been much more exciting at Birdham. The question is why Henry went to sea and he was probably a younger brother and so there was no farm for him!.

Have you checked the Hunston baptisms which do not appear on the IGI?

    Hello Geoffrey,

    Should I say "gene cousin?"

Many thanks for replying to my thread about Henry Gadd.

I am very pleased to tell you that in March of this year the "gene gods" were smiling on me and opened a crack in this brick wall. Since then the wall has crumbled and answers galore have come forth! I have made contact with numerous others researching these Gadds and collateral lines and we have agreed to compile a tree together.

I would be pleased if you would go to this link and check our tree-- and see who has contributed to all of the information. If you find some errors we would defintely like to hear about them.

Perhaps you would like to join in the fun?

I also would be pleased to hear from back from you and you can reach me here anytime.

and -- I had not checked the Hunston Baptisms-- actually this is the first time I have heard of them-- thank you for that-- I will check that out right away.

    Sincere regards,

    Pat--aka "grammbee"
