Thread: Temple Family (Kent to Poplar in London)

Hi

I am really new to this I am mananged to trace back to my great grandfathers birth (William Temple) in 1858. The cert states that he was born in Gravesend Kent. His decsendants then all appeared in Poplar. I am trying to find out more about his father who was also called William. At the time of young Willaim's birth his father was a Licensed Victualler (Pub Landlord). Then when I look at the young william's marriage cert in 1883 it still shows his father as a LV. This is the only info I have I cannot find William snr anywhere. Am I missing anything. Can anyone give me any tips on how I might search more fruitfully?



ADDED. I have found a William FrederickTEMPLE who was the landlord of the Cherry Tree pub in Brunswick Road Bromely East London in 1915. This probably was the son. Or could it be William snr, CONFUSED OR WHAT!!!

Also have you found William on the 1861 and 1871 census? if so can you post details please.

Yes, well sort of I am 90% certain she is Elizabeth Lester or Setter. I really can't read William jnr's birth cert with all those curls. I have tried to do some searches. I think I found her on the the 1861 census as a guest somewhere but she was showing 22 unmarried barmaid (pub connection??). William jnr was two. I cannot seem to find any other trace of her. I must be missing something. Thanks for your help it is appreciated.

Sorry forgot...When I looked at the census Elizabeth was shown as a visitor to a family called Nation in Deptford London, and showing as being a 22 year old Unmarried barmaid (pub connection??). But this could be totally the wrong one.

Mikey, have you considered that William senior may have been fictitious? Fictitious father's were rather common ............ to save embarrassment! I can't find a marriage between William Temple and an Elizabeth, which makes me question wether such a marriage did take place. Also there's the census record you found....... which looks a strong possibility......... and Elizabeth is single (if this is your Elizabeth).

It's something to think about anyway.



Added..........another possibility is - Elizabeth Temple was William senior's sister!!!

Am I right in thinking you have William junior on later census' in London?



If so, post details as it will help in the search.

Yep I have found him on the 1891 age 32. Wife Fanny in Poplar. Also in the 1901 now of course 42 still in Poplar. Hope this is enough, it is really hard to transcribe, all those curls again.

I am really confused now, but that doesnt take much.



I wonder if I am confusing two families.



The census ref for 1891 is RG12/335 and for 1901 RG 13/356.



I wonder if by pure coincidence they may be different families with the same name????
