Default A Titanic mystery to solve!

Family knowledge... unreliable at the best of times ! says that my Grandmother's Uncle and his young son died on the Titanic. (I thought the surname was White, myGreat grandmother's maiden name).

They were crew... possibly stewards or in victualling.... but I can't find them.

I've printed of the crew list and been through it several times, my only thought is that one of my Grandmother's aunt's married in which case the surname would be different.

Is there any way to find out the crew's next of kin details?

I found a site called Encyclopedia Titanica which has a full crew list as well as some biographies.

I had a look at the Victuallers and found a George Henry Chitty and an Archibald George Chitty, father and son. Both died on the Titanic and if their bodies were found they were unidentified. George Henry's wife was Julia. Lists his childrens names, his parents names and his siblings and address he was living at when he sailed. If you click on the name it gives you the biography.

    This is the link

    Hope this helps

Thanks for your help. I think these two are possibly the wrong age. It was the son's first job, so he would have been quite a bit younger, and he was known as either the 'lad' or the 'boy'.

Cheers anyway.. It's nice to know there's someone out there !!

That was just one example that I found.

I just went into the site that I gave the link to and looked for two people with the last surname that would be the age to be father and son. If you go in and do the same as I did you may come up with the right people. Their biography will then tell you if they are father and son. You just click on the name to look at their biography.

I am a Titanic fanatic so the name Titanic was sure to interest me. Funnily enough I found a Thorley on the crew so now I have to look and see if it is one of my Thorley's.

    Hi Kate

Just a quick update on the Titanic mystery.

George Henry Chitty actually married a Juliette Walden... which I am sure is my Julia Walden (The Titanic biography refers to her as Julia). All I have to do now is get a marriage certificate. They were married in the South Stoneham district... which is the right area.

Did you have any luck with your 'Thorley' on the crew?

    Best wishes

Thats great new Kirst. Hope it turns out to be your boys.

I got side tracked on the Thorley's, thanks for reminding me. Must look into it.

After yesterday I got side tracked again as I went to a Family History Fair in the area where my GG Grandfather started in Australia. We are still trying to find where his Pub was. Think we have narrowed it down to 2 places.

I managed to obtain a copy of the transcripts of the oldest surviving Catholic Cemetary in Australia where quite a few of my family are buried so that is keeping me busy.

    Hello Julia,

You might like to know that George Henry Chitty, Assistant Baker, age 44 years old is mentioned with his son Archibald George, a Steward, age 28 on the family grave in Old Common Cemetery, Southampton Common. Info from "Titanics Memorials Worldwide" by Brian Ticehurst

    Hi Victoria

I've just got the marriage certificate... which does prove that Juliette is my G.G.Aunt & that she was married to George Chitty. So she lost her husband & her son to the Titanic... how sad. Thanks for your info about the graves, I'll have to make a trip one day & photograph it.

    Best wishes

    Hi Victoria

I've just noticed that you're in Southampton. will you do me a fav... if you're ever in Old Common Cemetery? If you spot the grave of George & Archibald Chitty take a pic of it for me.

I have got on to Friends of the old cemetery... but I like to keep my bases covered. (Don't make a special trip!!!)

Thanks for the reference about the memorials.

    Kirst
