    Default Help Finding a 'Hodgson'abt 1825

    Good evening,

Could anyone suggest where I can look up birth records for my ancestor,

his name was Hodgson Hodgson (same first & family name!), we think was born abt 1825 and think the area was near Todmorden. (We have a place we think is Withms or Witherns, but it's impossible to decipher.

    Many thanks,

    Colin

    Laurie,

Many thanks for that. We 'think' his Father was called Richard and was also a farmer.

Could you tell me where you found it?

I was thinking, if I can narrow the area down, maybe a visit will be in order to check records!

    Again, thanks,

    Colin

    Hi Colin

I think you will definitely need to look at parish registers - I don't think it is on line anywhere.

Hodgson says on different censuses he was born Todmorden, Withen, Sowerby, Halifax. I think probably a farm in the country in the area (not Withern in Lincs). Sowerby near Halifax not Sowerby By Thirsk. I don't think Withen was a village or had a church so he could have been baptised at a church in any of the other places. There is a Withen Clough reservoir in the area.

So it looks as if he is in fact consistent as to the general area - personally I would try Sowerby then Todmorden then Halifax. I have looked at Sowerby St Peter - not there.

The reference Laurie found is a submitted rather than an extracted record so it is an indication rather than something definite.

    Good luck!

    Gillian,

    Many thanks for that.

The 'Withen' isinteresting, before he died, he had built a cottage on the farm where he had hoped to retire. This cottage was called Withen Cottage!.

A journey it is - not easy in a wheelchair, but when the weather improves in the Spring, I'll be off - gives me a while to find anything else out that I can.

Thank you for the help and advise,

    Colin
