    Default place names

how do you read the names of English places?

for example: Linton, Cambridgeshire, England and

West Wratting Linton, Balsham, Cambridgeshire, England

what is the difference adding Balsham

    Oz place names are like
    (town/city), (state), (country) (post code).

    Brisbane, Queensland, Australia 4001.

    Warragul, Victoria, Australia 3820.

what is the breakdown of the english address? and how do you know if there is a part of the address missing?

I hope this question makes sense

    thanks

    Frankie

    Hi Frankie,

Nowadays when addressing an envelope one would write

    1st the Street name

2nd the district of a town, or city

    3rd the town or city

    4th the County

    5th the post code.

    As ............

    15, Brook Road

    Lindley

    Exeter

    Devon

    EX5 3JS

I'm confused now. I have lived in 4 different houses and none of them has had 5 lines in the address. I wouldn't know if a line was missing either.

Sorry, I am still lost, please explain these 2

    Linton, Cambridgeshire, England and

West Wratting, Linton, Balsham, Cambridgeshire, England

what is the difference adding Balsham?

I gather that West Wratting is an area (what i would call a suburb) of the town of Linton, but where does Balsham come into it? and how can an outsider tell if they have missed a part of the name?

Ummmmm ... Nope, sorry didnt help at all ... I'm sitting here trying to work out how to phrase the question ...

What is the difference between saying i was born in "
Linton, Cambridgeshire, England" and "West Wratting, Linton, Balsham, Cambridgeshire, England"?

I am trying to write the places of BDM for my english ancestors and i am trying to write them ... sheesh brain strain ... with a certian amount of ... I think the word is continuity ... *washes mouth out for using big words so late at night* ...

So again, how does Balsham suddenly enter into a place where it wasnt before?

    I hope that made sense

    Hi Frankie,

Balsham and West Wratting are small villages about 2KM apart. I can't see any reason why they would both be in the same address. Both villages appear to be in Linton administrive district I think.

Ok Frankie............think I get what you want. It's an addresss from time gone by, yes? In which case there wouldn't have been postal codes, therefore folks tended to put as much info as poss to ensure mail etc was delivered to the right person.

What is the difference between saying i was born in "Linton, Cambridgeshire, England" and "West Wratting, Linton, Balsham, Cambridgeshire, England"?

So to answer your question, the difference between your 2 examples is ... simply 1 address giving more info than the other.

West Wratting is a locality of Linton in Cambridgeshire.

However as Balsham is smaller than Linton and only about 3 or 4 miles seperates them, then I would say the correct address would be..................

    West Wratting, Linton, Cambridgeshire.

    Hi Slizzy,

Thanks, the link helped me a bit. It also shows why we often got post that wasn't meant for us as there were 2 East Streets. I now see the importance of using post codes.
