Thread: Catherine (Kate) Cannon

I am in the process of doing a tree as a present for my mates 60th birthday in a few weeks and have hit a brickwall His wife told me that his granny was Irish, but she didnt know her name.....anyway from more recent info and the fact his grandad was a soldier....I have found Grandads WW1 pension records which proves who his wife was.



Catherine Cannon married John Speed in Chesterfield in 1897....(I know I will have to send for marriage cert to prove her father and her age....but with postal delays...thought you guys may be able to help!)



I have them both on the 1901 Census (she is Kate) living in CHesterfield and she is listed as being brn c1877 in Grimsby LIncolnshire.



I have searched the 1891 census for her and found a Kate/Catherine living in Dronfield Derbys, BUT she is down as brn 1872 and with a sister Lavinia born c 1877 AND her mother Mary is aged 34 born Ireland and a widower. IF Kate was 19....her mum was only 15 when born



ANyways...both these girls were listed as being born in Grimsby....but I cant find ANY of these peeps on the 1881, which I was hoping would give her fathers name, birth and country of birth



Also I cant find a marriage for MAry & Mr Cannon, births for the kids, death records OR Mary or Lavinia on the 1901. Allegedly Kates parent/family disowned her because she married a British soldier and they were Irish....but maybe it was because their 1st child was born 4 years afore they married!! lol

If it is, what about this for 1881? I know all details don't match Loz, but you and I know that frustratingly it's often the case. Anyway have a look at the original and see what you think.

Are we sure that Kates mother was Mary. Or could father have married twice. Found this in the 1881 census for USA.

Well I have found Catherines death in Sheff in Oct 1928 aged 54, which puts her birth date at c 1874



I'm inclined to think you may be right SLizzy.....the EUnice Lavinia & Catherine sound about right.....and John Morris was a lodger with them in 1891.....but....



1) Where was Sarah Ann on the 1891 Census



2) Where were JOhn , Mary & Mary on 1871 ??!? If Mary was born in Grimsby c1870.....I cant find any of them



AT least they were consistent with the place of birth for the children...which is more than they were with ages and names!



Catherine maiden name was definately Cannon when she wed, as I have this info on her hubbys WW1 Army pension records...it also lists the witnesses to the wedding the date an place...but not HER fathers name



ohh well will keep plodding and await the cert

I've had another search through the census records tonight Loz but not really got anywhere. This family is a mystery. Hopefully more will be revealed

when you receive the certificate. I just hope Kate/Catherine's mother was married to her father, then at least you have 2 parents names to easier ascertain her identity. You must let us know what the certificate says as my curiousity is in need of satisfying

I can find no birth registrations for ANY of these kids



I spoke to my friends sister last night and she been asking her mum (who's almost 90...and well..... ...bless her) she still says that Kate/Catherine was born in Killarney, Ireland.. ..but why would she put Grimsby on the census??!!?



Just have to wait for the Cert an see wot it says

Well I eventually got the certificate for the marriage....and STILL confused



It states that Catherine was 21 years and a spinster....her father is listed as John Cannon - Pit Sinker........it does not state deceased...so would he still be alive....or weren't they required to list this???!?



It also states that John Speed is a Widower......so thats ANOTHER avenue I will have to take a look at

Thanks for the update Loz. Very disappointing for you I've taken a quick look for a John/James Cannon - pit sinker, with no luck My husband has a weeks holiday so I'm not spending as much time as usual doing internet searching - I don't concentrate well when there's someone at home, though I AM enjoying the company If you haven't got any further by next week I'll try again - I'll have more time then to devote to searches.
