On 1881 Census there is a Robert Bruce age 23 a boarder living at 61 Ashfield St Cottages Liverpool with a family Norwall - born Scotland - occupation brass finisher

I think mary Ellen's brother Robert john could be with his aunt and uncle in 1901



There is a Robert J Bruce nephew age 16 b. Liverpool living with John Kerley(?) 35 b Liverpool, wife catherine 30 b. Ireland, daughter Annie M 8 b. liverpool

Thanks Gillian I am glad you mantioned this ... I do think he is the Robert Bruce who married Mary Moran...hopefully may be able to connect him to my grandmother... I know when Mary and Robert married they both lived in Field Street 143/145 ... I thinks thats the same area as Ashfield street. I'll have to dig out me old A-Z Thanks so much.

Thanks Slizzy yes I do have this but thanks anyway... as you can see Mary Ellen fits the bill as far as age and location is concerned... its just her father's middle name on her birth/cert 'Bertram' thats not matching the name on Gran's Wed/cert 'John'. This is the family I have been researching in the hope it is her family. thanks again

Hi Harryman thanks for this, it would seem then that this family may have broken up maybe their mother and stepfather died???

It is looking like I could be on the right track...I have found a Mary Ellen Bruce age 15 in a home called Connaught House Faith St Within Winchester 1901 census but she doesnt have a place of birth???? It taught the girls to work in service jobs etc, My Gran was a servant so I'm wondering if this could be my Mary Ellen. Maybe when she was old enough she came back to Liverpool to work and later married.
