    Default Born out of wedlock

How can I find out about a child born out of wedlock ?

He or she was the child of Ann Sturges and William Barnett of Keysoe, Bedfordshire.

A maintenance order of 1s 6d was made in 1824 and removed on 29/12/1826.

Would the child's name have been Sturges or would it have been changed to Barnett after they married in October 1826.

    Thanks

I knew my Grandfather was born out of wedlock I found his birth info under his mothers name but his surname was the same as his fathers, eventually Grandfathers parents married when he was 7 years old.

    Hi Mary

I had a look at the Keysoe parish records - nothing simple as usual!

The only birth to a single mother at around the right time was -

David Sturges baptism (at age 4) 9 July 1826 to Susan Sturges single woman

Checked the marriage - as you said 17 Oct 1826 William Barnet to Ann Sturges witnesses Charles Barnett and Thomas Sturges

No proof but I feel that Susan & Ann are probably the same.

I expect then as now child could either keep their birth name or take the name of the father/stepfather according to family choice

Bless you Gillian. I feel sure that's the right one. I've come across a Susan being called Ann before in my lot.

    I think I'm a bit nearer now...............thanks a lot

Is there any chance of finding out whether they had any other children ? Might help link them more directly to grans side of the family.

Hi Mary - I had a further look at Keysoe but there are no further births to William & Ann. I guess they moved (is nothing simple??)
