Thread: Jacob BROWN b.1817 Belchamp Walter, Essex

I have Jacob BROWN aged 64 in the 1881 census, born Belchamp Walter, Essex. This is in the Sudbury Registration District at about the time he was born, I think.



He is shown with wife Sophia aged 63 born same place and still living there.



I have been unable to find a marriage for them on FreeBMD. In Q4 1839 there are the following:



BRADNAM Charlotte Sudbury 12 891

BROWN Jacob Sudbury 12 891

CHATTERS Henry Sudbury 12 891

MANSFIELD Sarah Sudbury 12 891

MARTIN Harriett Sudbury 12 891



I can find no other marriage for Jacob to Sophia in any County up to 1858.



Would anyone please be able to let me know his wife's name on earlier censuses? Also the earliest born child I have for them is Julia b.1850 same place.

It may be better to send for one of the childrens birth certificates to ensure you have the correct maiden name for Sophia. The 1839 marriage you have found could possibly be the marriage of your Jacob, but with Sophia missing from the indexes.

Thank you very much Loz. It's good to have all that information. Another lady was able to search Parish Records for me and found that the missing spouse was Sophia HOWARD. Now I have a much more complete picture.
