    Hi Gillian,

Thank you for trying to help! Here goes:

My 3xGrt Grandad Joseph Grindey (born c 1775 died bef.1835) married Ellen ?(Would love to know her name and marriage date as well!) (born c 1783 Fawfieldhead died 1857 Round Knowl, 2nd marriage to John Hulme Aug 1835).

This couple had 8 children between 1803 - 1825 first 2 born & bap Elkstone, the next 4 at Longnor and the last 2 born Fawfieldhead.

Joseph (1775) had a brother JOhn born c 1778 who married Dorothy Brindley born c1784 and they had 14 children.

I visited, St John the Baptist Graveyard,Elkstone the other week and found many graves and memorials relating to both of these families. There was also a Memorial Stone referring to a John Grindey of Round Knoll died Jan 5th 1817 aged 71 (so born c 1746). This is at the side of a memorial to some of John & Dorothy children.

I am wondering if this could be the father of Joseph (1775) and John (1778) ??!?

There are 2 properties for Round Knoll on all the census and all the Grindeys that reside there over the years are either John or Josephs descendants. ROund KNoll being in the parish of Alstonefield and/or Elkstone or Elkstone &

Warslow Small hamlets in the Staffordshire Moorlands and i DO get confused with them at times

There is a marriage for a John Grindey & Ann Harrison at Alstonefield Sep 1767 on the IGI, but they only have 2 daughters listed on IGI, Betty dec 1777 and Mary 1784

I dont know when, or if, I can go to Staffs R O myself and have exhausted all sources I can....so would really appreciate any help on these

    TIA

    Loz

P.S. Hope you can follow my rambles

    Hi Lozzie

The library has a transcript of Alstonfield parish registers which include Elkstone, Forfieldhead & Warslow.

Are you sure about the Ellen? There is no Joseph Grindey/Ellen marriage but 30.9.1800 a Joseph Grindey married Elizabeth Brindley (? Dorothy's sister) which looks quite likely.

There isn't a baptism record for either Joseph or John in the parish so maybe John & Ann are not their parents.

John & Ann had a daughter Jane (as well as the 2 you found) baptised 30.5.1773. There is also a record of a burial for Ann Grindey daughter of John 24.2.1779 who could be another.

    Thanks Gillian

Ellen was recorded as living with one of her sons on a census and was then a HULME, marrying for the 2nd time c1835 at ALstonefield.

I will have to have another look through my notes hopefully one day I will break this wall!

    Thanks for looking for me

    Hi Lozzie

On the IGI William is recorded as son of John (not Joseph) and Ellen Grindy?

    Hi Gillian

I am revisiting this old chestnut!!

i have been looking through my files and emails and have found the following:

About 5 years ago SKS looked up the Longnor parish records and found me the following:

    Baptisms

    1808 Dec 27 Elizabeth

    1811 Feb 12 Ann

    1816 Apr 10 Moses

    1819 Jan 22 Jesse

All parents Joseph & Ellen GRINDY weaver of Round Knowl

The person who did the searches said that they didnt use Longnor church for Burials or Marriages....and to perhaps try Alstonefield or even Leek

Also Baptised in this church were the children of John Grindey & Dorothy Brindley.

All through the census from 1841 - 1901 the properties at Round Knowl have been occupied by either John or Josephs descendants.

On looking into William Grindey born c1825....(whom on IGI has parents as JOHN & Ellen) I have a copy of his marriage cert which states his father as JOSEPH - Weaver

So I still believe that Ellen Grindey who married John HULME was Josephs wife

???? Just really don't know where to go from here

I have looked again at the gravestones that I found at Elkstone.....and wonder....if the Grindeys lived at Round Knowl from at least 1808 - at least 1901....would the stone of John Grindey died Jan 5th 1817 aged 71...possibly be the father of John & Joseph???!?

    TIA
