    Default JOHN WILLIAM WOODSIDE

    Hello

My Grandfather was JOHN WILLIAM WOODSIDE born 21st May 1871. He is on the 1881 Census with parents ISAAC & ALICE ANN WOODSIDE and brothers & sisters living at 98 Salisbury Street Everton, Liverpool.

I think I found him on the 1891 Census as JOHN WILLM WOODSIDE living at FAREHAM HANTS and was a GUNNER in the Royal Artillery. Can anyone tell me if FAREHAM HANTS was the ARMY or NAVY? I always thought my Grandfather went to Sea.

I cannot find him at all on the 1901 Census.

I also cannot find his brother ISAAC WOODSIDE born 1869 on the 1891 & 1901 Census. There is an ISAAC & a MARY J living with a CHURCH family in Kirkdale but I don't think that is him (maybe a cousin).

I also couldn't find their sister MARGARET ANN WOODSIDE born 1874 on the 1891 Census but I found her on the 1901 Census married to a HENRY GALLOWAY. I found their marriage in 1898 at St Nicholas Church in Liverpool.

Their mother ALICE ANN WOODSIDE died in 1882 and their father ISAAC WOODSIDE died in 1893.

Can anyone see where (1) JOHN WILLIAM is in 1901? He married ANN JANE MOONEY in 1906, was living at 100 Priory Grove Everton in 1911 and died in 1951 when living at 39 Bushey Road Walton. (2) ISAAC WOODSIDE in 1891 & 1901 & MARGARET ANN in 1891?

I searched on Ancestry.Co.Uk, FindmyPast & 1901 National Archives site.

    Thanks

    Hi Pat,

There were Army, Royal navy and Merchant Navy personell in Fareham. There are a few more R.N than others. Sorry it is not of much help.

Thanks for your reply to my message re John William Woodside. I do have a photo of him in uniform. The hat doesn't match the Army.

    Hi Pat

If John William was in the army he would probably be fighting in the Boer War in 1901

    Hello Gillian

Thanks for your message. I had thought about that and had posted a message on a Yahoo site ages ago but didn't get anywhere. My brother seems to remember some talk about the Boer War. I know he went to Belgium as he gave me some Belgium postage stamps dated 1898 & 1900 which I still have. He must have been out of the army in 1906 when he married as he was living at an address in West Derby Liverpool.

    Thanks again.

    Pat
