    Default One Name Searches

    Hi All,

its been a while since I've been to visit. hope ur all doing well.

I've come for a bit of advice.

I've been doing very well with my family tree since I started it last year, and whilst I've been mainly using online sites to collect data I ahve had many contacts with folks all over the world.

Whilst I have been collating info from many of the branches, I have been drawn back to my own family name and decided to embark on collating all the names I could find based (to begin with) only in the UK.

I have begun by typing up all the MEESE names from Familysearch.org (over 500 or them) and have also decided to include the MEES name as this shows up in my tree also. (there are over 1000 of them on familysearch).

My question to you is, am i fgoing about this the right way? what would be the best approach to collating these two names and recodring them and also how do i let people know I am doing this?

I have already put messages up at Ancestry and Genforum but I'm not sure how far that will get me.

    Please advise.

    Kindest Regards

    Helen

    Hi Helen,

I don't know if you have seen this site, but it could save you money on your lookups.

I am not sure about some of the records on Family search unless you keep to the IGI and not member submitted records.

    hi Starlight

thanx so much for replying. I realised after i posted that this message was really in totally the wrong message area on the forum....sorry about that.

I've had a look at the One Name Guild Before, but I didnt think they would want me joining as for now I want to concentrate on just the UK and not a worldwide search.

I realise most of the names on Familysearch.org is a bit iffy as a lot of it is input by users, but I thought it may at least give me a start...and so far it has yeilded some interesting stuff that I have been able to attach to my existing tree.

I guess my only recourse is to set up a Meese/Mees website in the hopes that others may be searching and looking for help.

I would be happy to offer my help here to anyone researching these two names.

    thank u again

    Regards

    Helen

Hi Helen - glad the Mees' are going well.

The Society of Genealogists are doing a half day on One Name Studies on 29 Sep. I shall be going so even if you can't/don't want to attend I could pass on anything I think would be useful.

    Gillian,

that is so very kind of you. I wont be able to attend that course (although would love to) but any help/advice you can connect from them would be very much appreciated. I am making slow progress collating the names - mainly working through Ancestry at the moment - but once I have things typed into my Family Historian prgramme i will start looking at individual branches.

thank you once again for your help.

    kindest Regards

    Helen

    Hi Helen

I went on Saturday and it was useful - I am thinking of following your good example but am not sure as it would be such a commitment!

I think it is probably worth joining the Guild of One Name Studies even if you are not registering your name with them (I am going to join anyway).

The first lecture by Peter Walker is supposed to be on line at www.goons.org.uk/files so people stopped taking notes but I can't find it today! So if you can't either I will chase it up next week.

The second lecture was about the resources held at the SOG library and was interesting but probably not particualarly relevant to either of us at this stage.

    thanx for the message Gillian,

it sounds like you had a good time and that it was very interesting.

My one name study is going very well, i'm not following any kind of plan as such, but what i have done is started ny typing up all the male heads of family (and their family members) from the 1901 census from both the Meese and Mees trees. My plan is to then trace back each of these branches and connect them together...the hardest part has been the initial typing up...several thousand names....but now i can trace the branches at my leisure.

I thought by getting the names onto my Family Historian I can then start the more detailed work of investigating each family from other records....i plan to visit Mells in Somerset maybe next year to further the work on the Mees'.

thank you for the links. I will take a look at them and will also consider joining the Guild at some point.

    kindest Regards

    Helen
