Thread: hammond marriage

Hi All

I am looking for my great grandfathers 2nd wife, he definatly had one as my grandfather remembers his mum dying and his father getting married again. My great grandfathers name is James henry Hammond Born 1861 in bermondsey london. His first wife and mother of his ten children was sarah . They married in st saviour in 1883 and sarah died in 1908.

The story in the family is that he married quickly after sarahs death because he wanted someone to look after his children and her family did not approve of the marriage.She was from a family who manufactured scales ,The senior living relatives in my family cannot remember the name of the scales which is unfortunate because this was her maiden name.

thank you again for your help . I have a feeling it could be frances sarah sherwood i could be wrong but james owned a sweet shop on the corner of lucey road bermondsey which he handed down to his eldest son also called james. james snr named the shop sherwoods. would i be crazy to think he may have named the shop after his second wife?

Although it could be purely coincidental naming the shop Sherwood's - it does sound a plausible theory. Did James own the shop while he was married to his first wife? and if so did it have a different name then, or did he open the shop after his wife died?

he opened the shop after his 1st wife died. up till then he was a tanner working in factory in bermondsey, but with ten kids to look after it was easier to be the employer than the employee, so he bought the shop and lived above it with the children,

maybe frances worked in the shop and thats how they met he was a fast worker lol. no wonder her parents were'nt happy
