    Default Adoption Story

Hi, I am pretty new to this site, but I would like to share a story with you. I had known for five years that I had a brother and sister who my mum gave up for adoption. I found out by accident about my sister, but I have always known about my brother. Six years after my mum passed away I decided to trace my brother. I had come accross a date on a post mortem that I didn't know about so I went through the birth records for 1956, which is the year I found. I cam up with nothing until I started on the 1957 records. I found two names which could of been a possibility, but one I was certain of, it was my grandmothers middle name and the middle name of another sister of mine. I decided to send off to Southport GRO and asked if the details matched my mums, I wanted the certificate. A week or so later, I had my sisters birth certificate in my hands. I found the birth entry for my brother as I had his exact date of birth and knew his birth name. I went to After Adoption in Liverpool and told them what I knew. This was in June 06, by September 06, I was talking to my sister and then March 07 I found my brother. Yesterday was the first time I met my sister and the second time I had met my brother. So to people who want to trace adoptive relatives, do it. I know they don't all end up in happy endings, but as my sister said to me "thank you for plucking up the courage to get in touch, I know someone cares". Here is the link to the site, After Adoption is a very helpful and friendly place, so go for it. http://www.afteradoption.org.uk/

    Thanx for reading, Lynn

Just to update you all on my progress. My relationship with my brother and sister have gone from strength to stregnth. I have two new nephew's and two new neice's. It has been great to get to know them all. We have gone down some rocky roads as you may well understand, but have come up trumphs. We have swapped many photographs and stories. My kids are loving having another aunt and uncle and more cousins.

Thank you both for your wishes. It hadn't been any easy decision to make on tracing them. You hear of so many sad endings when finding adopted relatives. I had mixed feelings myself, was I being disloyal to my mum (she passed away long before I found them), fear of being rejected, their feelings too, did they want to see me, would it complicate things for them. So many questions ran round my mind, but I thought if I don't do it, I would regret it later on. My sister can't tell her adopted mum, she is in her late eighties and came from a generation that thought once you have been adopted, you don't need to know anything else. My brother has the full support from his adopted parents. As I said to them both, your adopted family must always come first. I made it clear that I would take the pace that they wanted to go. It was eleven months before I met my sister and a month before I met my brother. So you can see why I left it to them to decide when we should meet. Now we have gone so far and I am loving it. Lynn x
