Default This American needs some Scotish help please

In researching my family history, I learned that we come from Scotland.

Here is what I need help with. On a US census form, my great great great granfather lists his fathers place of birth as "Scottish Gaelic L"

Can anyone tell me what this means? On a seperate census form I find that my great great great grandmother listed her parents birthplace the same way: "Scottish gaelic L"

Just in case anyone is looking for their family: My great great grandfather was William Hogg, born in Scotland around 1825-1827. My great great great grandmother was margaret Minto Thomas, she was born 04 Sep 1836 in Avondale, Landark, Scotland.

My great great great grandparents were married January 22, 1858 in Perth Co. Canada

    Hi Chris,

Scottish Gaelic (Lewis), a Celtic language spoken in Scotland and Nova Scotia, Canada...

I haven't been able to find exactly what the Lewis means.

    Hi Chris,

I suspect 'Lewis' is in reference to the Isle of Lewis which is in the western Isles of Scotland.

    That made it easier Slizzy.

"The Gaelic Language is spoken by around 86,000 individuals primarily in the North of Scotland and in the Western Isles (eg. Skye, Lewis, Harris). The vast majority of gaelic speakers are bilingual Gaelic / English. Today there are very few people who do not speak English"

Thank you all very much. I have found a great deal of new information since I started this post, as it turns out, I still need some Scottish help!!!

I have been able to find nothing on William Hogg and Catherine Bryson. They are the parents of William Hogg II, born in Scotland, Feb. 1826

William Hogg II migrated to Canada where he married Margaret Minto Thomson, daughter of Gavin Thomson and Jane Minto, all of Scotland.

    Thank you all in advance.

    Hi Chris,

I am sorry, I can't find a William Hogg born to William Hogg and Catherine Bryson between 1825-1827, or a Hogg Bryson marriage.

    Hi Chris,

William wouldn't have been born on Scotish Islands would he ? This could explain why I can't find his birth.

I have several US Census reports for William Hogg, he lists his place of birth as Scotland, in the year 1826. He also says his native language is "Scottish Gaelic L"
