Thread: Robert William Chignell

I have been trying to solve this problem for 12 months, I think I need help.

Robert William Chignell born 1864 London married Ellan Halliday born 1876, Ellans father was John Halliday and that is all I know about her. Don't know who her mother was, where she was born and married.



Roberts line is no problem so can some one please put me out of my misery.

What was Robert's occupation?

I think this may be the marriage:



Robert Chignell and Ellen Halliday Sept Qtr 1920 West Ham 4A 1180.



How did you know that her father's name was John? what/who was your source?

The chignells are from my elderly cousins family so I had to rely on her for the information.



What I have is Robert William Chignell born 25/9/1864 to William Robert and Martha Jane Shipman married 3/1849, London. William was a packing case maker. I believe Robert had been married before. When Robert died 4/8/1928 he was a general provisions shop keeper in Ardwick, Manchester. The Chignell family didn't move away from London area until then. All I know about John Halliday is he was a mechanical engineer by trade.

I think you may need to apply for the marriage certificate mentioned in previous reply, this will identify who is Ellen Halliday's father and more importantly her age at the time of marriage. When you have this info you will be able to check back further with your research.

I now have Ellens marriage certificate.



Ellen Halliday, 44 years Spinster, 308 Hoe Street, Walthamstow. John Halliday, deceased, mechanical engineer.



Robert Chignell, 56, widower, builders foreman, 308 Hoe Street, Walthamstow. William Chignell, deceased, Packing case maker.



married 29th September 1920, register office, West Ham.



I had an idea Robert had been married before but couldn't find proof.



heres hoping this helps to find where Ellen and John came from, also her mothers name.
