I'll have a look next week but unfortunately I think the IGI entry is one of the doubtful ones - where it says 'about' a particular date it usually means someone thought it likely rather than that they actually found an entry! It might be worth looking on Historical Directories site to see if you can find any reference to John. (Just missed you in the chat room!)

    Hi Gillian
I found John Parker b 1815 on the family search site you told me about. I got all excited because I thought I had found marriage, but they only put Elizabeth (no maiden name) for 1835. Is it possible for you to look for their marriage? They must have been married in Leicester, as their first few children were born there. John was a tobacconist. They lived in Colton St. parish of St Margarets.
I shall put the parents and siblings on my tree, with year of birth.
    Thanks for your help.
    Best Wishes
    Jackie.

Hi Jackie - that's good news! Scalford - in the Melton Mowbray area. I would certainly put them on your tree but note that dates of birth are approximate and try to get further evidence form parish registers. Pre-1837 you are usually working with approximate dates anyway - it is fairly rare to get birth dates - you usually get baptisms only.

    Hi Gillian
I have found Thomas and Ann on the 1841 census, and two children still in Diseworth - James and Benjamin - Thomas looks as if he is in a place called Scalford or Sealford, I will look it up on a map of Leicestershire.
Would it be OK to put Thomas and Ann on my family tree, and guess at birth dates?
Or should I wait until I have checked more thoroughly.
    Yours
    Jackie.

    Hi Gillian
Thank you so much for this information.
This may bring me to the end of my quest, but I will see if I can find out more about his wife Elizabeth. Who Knows!
I am very grateful to you, I can't believe how quickly this has come to light, you are great.
    I will keep in touch.
    Yours
    Jackie.

Hi Jackie - have looked at Disworth registers and I am quite sure the John Parker baptised 25 May 1814 is the one (there are no other Parker families in Diseworth at the time). Parents Thomas & Ann Parker. Thomas a farmer. The ceremony was conducted by a curate from Kegworth, no idea why but there may be some Kegworth connections. Other children of Thomas and Ann -
    Elizabeth b Aug 22 1811 bap April 19 1812
    James b July 17 baptised Dec 25 1808
    John b Dec 11 1806 bap May 17 1807
    James b July 16 1804 bap April 14 1805
    Benjamin b Sep 18 bap Dec 25 1802
Thomas b Nov (date unreadable) 1799 bap April 13 1800
    Mary b Aug 25 bap Aug? 1798

Hi poli - I don't think you were particularly looking for a look up but I have found a baptism for Thomas Smart in Shearsby Sep 13 1907 parents Moore and Mary Smart. There are more of the family on the IGI. It might be an idea to add Smart on the surnames and counties forums?

Hi Jackie - you can look on the IGI (familysearch.org) - Diseworth registers are on there 1813-49 christenings, 1813-36 marriages. I can't see anything else - if you are taking his age from the 1841 remember that ages are rounded down to the nearest 5 years so if it says age 25 a person may be up to 29. I am going to the records office tomorrow afternoon so will be able to check then
