Both my great uncles were killed in the great war. Their names appear on the Arras Memorial. They are John and Robert Hughes. I don't know what the date of their death is, though.

If you look on the CWGC site you should find them.

There are a few John Hughes on the Arras memorial but this one is in the Middlesex regiment - not so much information though. You probably ought to check the others.

John and Robert were both in a Devonshire regiment. Thanks for trying though. Trouble is there were so many Johns and Roberts!!! Two very popular names from the times.

No-one of those names on the Arras memorial in Devonshire regiment - do you know where they were born or lived before the war? or parents names?

They were both born in Tiverton in Devon. Their parents names were Noah and Susan Hughes.
I have checked with other members of the family and they are pretty sure it was a Devonshire regiment, although they cannot be certain!

Gillian, thank you so, so much. Even though Roberts mum was Susie Jones, my great grandmother actually brought him up, which I never knew till yesterday. Thank you once again.

Yes - I found Noah a widower with the 2 boys on the 1901 census. A sad story.

Gillian, I've seen a photo of the Arras memorial with both my great-uncles names on it. It was very moving to see. Thanks again for your help.
