Thank you very much for the information that you have sent. I don't have much info on Emily yet, i was just asking on the off chance that they may have been buried together. I will certainly be paying the cemetery a visit. I don't live too far away really and i am excited now. I have ordered JW's death certificate as well for my records.

I will do.

I might also be able to help people as well with some things.

I have a book here that if i have the time i plan to scan in full. Its called 'Manchester City Battalions Book of Honour' It is a record of all the battalions that were formed during world war one. It has photographs of all the Companies formed in each battalion along with roll numbers, rank and name for each man.

It will take a while to scan but i can always look for people in the book should anyone wish.

I went along to Philips Park today Mike. I never found the grave, better luck next time i suppose. I think i will take a larger spade with me next time. You were right about it being overgrown, you cannot see some of the stones at all in places. I found an area in the far corner of the plot that contained stones with some 1919 dates on but not the right one. I presume my great grandfather is in a common grave?

Do you have any more detailed plans of the cemetery that actually show you where the plots are or give me any more info that would pinpoint it better or is it just trial and error and lots of digging?

Hi Migky, I wonder if you could be so kind as to help me out in my research please? I am looking for the resting place of my Great Grandfather. His name was David Rankin, originally born in 1844 at Pudsey in Yorkshire, he lived for most of his life in Warrington. Somewhere around the turn of the century he moved to Manchester. The 1901 Census has him living at 49-57 Grosvenor Street, South Manchester (Parish of Chorlton -upon-Medlock of St.Luke), as a Lodging House manager. He is listed as having died in the first quarter of 1905 (8c 519). Have you any ideas as to where I could look to find out where he is buried or any other information on this Lodging House in Grosvenor Street? Thankyou in anticipation.

Hi & welcome, i am sorry to say that on your first posting i can not help with this man. The nearest i could match to him was some years later in 1928 to a David Rankine. There are a few rankin's buried in Manchester council cemertery's. Do you have any other of the Rankin family buried in Manchester i might be able to help with? As for the address you gave, they seem to be a number of houses and i looked on the 1895/1927 &1929 directories and just found the names of the occupants and there trades, nothing relating to your Rankin or about the properties.

Hi Migky, thanks for the swift reply firstly. As far as I am aware, I have no other ancestors buried in Manchester. David Rankin was born in Yorkshire, and lived in Warrington for over 30 years. Somewhere between 1891 and 1901 he moved to Manchester, and according to the 1901 census lived at the address In Grosvenor Street as I previously posted. His death index just gives Chorlton as the place the death was registered. Sorry I can't shed more light on the puzzle, but thank you ever so much for your efforts.

Hi, like i said i could not find any record of him in any of the manchester council run cemertery's. Do you know what religion he was? If he was Catholic, he could have been buried in a privet cemertery. Moston (ST. Joseph's ) is the largest privet one i know of and there records are not on public veiw, but you can phone them and ask. Sometime they are not very helpfull, but still worth a try? Other than that , he may be in some local church yard? Or even have been buried back in Yorkshire?
Hope these two links below help you find him and let me know how you get on.
