Default Cemeteries In Woolwich

My Great Grandmother Caroline Elizabeth Whitehead died on the 13th February 1898 aged 36years at the Infirmary. My Great Grandparents lived at number 36 St Mary Street Woolwich. The Death Certificate states the sub district of East Plumstead. The Death was registered on the 14th February 1898. This September I am returning to England and would very much like to visit the Grave of my Great Grandmother. Can anyone help me here as to where she might have been laid to rest.

Marion

I have edited this bit 3 times now as I keep finding cemetaries http://www.greenwich.gov.uk/Greenwic...yLocations.htm
The above link is all cemetaries in the London Borough of Greenwich, which is the borough that Woolwich comes under.

parks@greenwich.gov.uk is the e-mail address for all general enquiries for the cemetary services of the council.

If you want someone to come a wander round the cemetaries with you give us a shout I don't live too far from Woolwich

Good luck

Carol

Thankyou very much for the information you have given to me Carol. I will keep your offer in mind as its been many many years that I was last in Woolwich. My Grandparents lived in John Wilson St and Mum and I would catch the Ferry over to see them. Childhood memories Carol. Most of my Mothers family came from Woolwich or Aldershot. If I need any further help would it be ok to message you? Are you far away from St Mary Magdeline Church? I may have spelt that name wrong? Think I did remembering my records.

Bye for now Carol

Hi Marion, I have lived in SE London all of my life. I lived on the adjacent street to St Mary's Street when I was younger. There is a graveyard at St Mary's Church at the end of St Mary's Street, but I doubt that your ancestor would be buried here unless he/she was affluent.
Most people would have been buried in other municipal cemeteries. There are several of these in the vicinity of Woolwich. There is a cemetery at Charlton(about 2 miles away) but I know that this was a private cemetery when your ancestor died. (it has since been taken over by the local council)
A more likely place would be Woolwich and Plumstead municipal cemeteries which are located in the London Borough of Greenwich. This is the web link that you will need to find the addresses of these cemeteries:

http://www.greenwich.gov.uk/cgi-bin/...RYS+cemeteries+

In the 19th century lots of people in this area were not wealthy enough to afford a headstone. Indeed most people were buried in public graves. This happened to my great grandfather in the 1920s. As a journeyman tailor I had expected that he would have had some type of memorial. However, after writing to the Cemeteries Department they told me he was in a public grave in Woolwich Cemetery. At the time of his death he was living in Charlton, not that far away from St Mary's Street so my guess is your relative will be buried here in either Woolwich or Plumstead cemetery.

A further place that could provide details of your ancestor is the Heirtage Centre which is a relatively new facility in Woolwich. Here you can find out info on the area that your ancestor came from. There is a very interesting exhibition which traces the history of the Woolwich area. Also you can research burials by parish.

I hope that this info might help you in your quest to find your ancestor's grave.

Andrea

Thankyou Andrea for your reply to my thread. I have been in touch with the Greenwich Heritage Centre and paid for searches regarding my Whitehead Ancestors who lived in Woolwich/Greenwich. Nothing turned up or could be found on them. My Gran and her sisters were born in Woolwich so I dont know why the search turned up the way it did. Left a big hole in my pocket so I wont be contacting the above again. As I live in Australia I cant go and visit the Cemeteries or have a walk around to see if any of my Whiteheads can be found. I have almost given up the search as it has become a real battle. Sorry Andrea for taking so long in getting back to you.

Many Thanks Marion
