Hello,
I havent got an answer to your query but if you have a look at this site somebody else is asking about a mass drowning in Brighton in 1900. Might be the same thing, or even a different drowning on the same stormy day perhaps! curiousfox.com/history/sussex Also, As you may know there are LOTS of cemeteries in Brighton. This is the council website and the person you are looking for could be in any one of the first 5. http://www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/inde...quest=c1116106 There are also some private cemeteries in Brighton, One of which is the Brighton & Preston Cemetery in Hartington Road, which is very big. The Evening Argus is the local daily paper in Brighton and was going in 1900 so they might have details of the funeral. Brighton Council will also do a search for the right person if you cough up the dough! http://www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/inde...quest=c1001142 Hope that helps David Last edited by Starlight; 08-06-2007 at 05:06 PM. In case you havn't solved this query Nan -
I believe the accident happened on 10 April 1900 off Brighton. Mass funeral - 14/4/1900 - Grave is at the Brighton & Preston Cemetary in Hartington Road. davidii |

Hi Nan
I live only 2 miles away! I'll be most happy to do some pics for you. Do you have a reference number or location of the grave? This is a very big graveyard and the cemetery office is often not staffed. |

Hi Davidii.
I am so sorry i have not got a reference number or the location of the grave. The graves are of several seamen drowned while being ferried to HMS Desperat, Moored off Brighton in 1900 they were Bluejackets. I do know he has no headstone, All the men are buried under a stone with there names on each one. the stones are in the shape of a cross. I will be happy if you can take me some photos, but this is not a lot of info for you to find it. I would to say thank you. From nan mo |

Hi Nan Mo
I'll try to locate - maybe there will be a sympathetic groundsman who might help.... I'll first pop into the records office to see if they have a newspaper report which might assist. regards david |

Hi Nan Mo
I regret only mixed success! Ive managed to scan the newspaper reports. The incident caused quite a stir at the time. They report the accident, the inquest ,the procession and the burial. The local paper gave details of the rough location/description of the gravesite - but despite enquiring at the lady in the office and asking 2 workers - I regret I was unable to find it. It is a massive site and many of the older graves are covered in ivy or buried in the grass, and many now totally unreadable. What a disappointment! (I still can't find the graves of 2 of my relatives who are buried in the same graveyard) but I had hoped to find these unfortunate seven. If you send me a private message with your Email address - I'll send the copies of the newspaper reports regards David |
