can anyone help with this william cornelius drowned on the ship the ss cato in 1940 aged 60 he lied in bristol i would say he was born in 1879 cannot find his parents anywhere i know he lived in bristol and hios wifes name was lily nee gibbings. the only william i can detect is born in tavistock he was in the merchant navy and that shows his birth in plymouth no record of parents

William married Lily E. L Gibbings(daughter of Frederick and Emily Gibbings) at Bristol Gloucestershire, oct/Nov?Dec quarter in 1911, gro number 6a,439.
If you obtain this marriage cert from the gro then it should give you William's occupation , where he was living at time of marriage and his age. It should also give you his father's name and occupation.
Lily Emliy L Gibbings was born July quarter of 1885 in Bedminster Gloucestershire. She died Jan/Feb/Maar 1961 age 75 in Bristol Gloucestershire.
William Cornelius may be mentioned on the national Archive site.

yes i think this is my william on the ship the excellence. i have his marrage certificate stateing that he was 30 in 1911 when he married lilly gibbings it states that his fathers name was frederick charles cornelius but thats all i have apart from his death on the ship the ss cato in 1940 i have not been able to trace his father or mother thanks for your help regards sandra

Can you tell us what is on William's marriage cert that you have. It gives the father as Frederick Charles but what was his job? Does it say?
And are there any witnesses to the marriage. Can you give us the names?

what is the full info on williams marriage cert. fathers occupations, witnesses, addresses etc. that sometimes gives clues.

william cornelius states his age as 30 years old at time of marrage adress is 1 water street bedminster bristol marrage in 1911 in the wesleyn chapple bedminster bristol witnesses are violet florence gibbings and fredrick gibbings. william and his father both have jobs as labouers. many thanks for helping regards sandra
