Hey All, I'm looking for info on my step-grandfather's grandmother's family. All the info we have is from Australian Marriage & Death certificates. She was Mary Ann Sloss, born 1844ish in London to James & Jane (nee Ussell) who possible originayed from Ireland
Mary immigrated to Oz in 1869 but as far as we know she was the only one to do so.
Mainly after Census & BMD records (anything else would be great as well!)

Hi Baz,

This is the only one near Mary Ann's birthdate that you've given:

1861 Cencus
Wright William Head 33 Millwright Middlesex
Wright Eliza Wife 33 Middlesex
Wight Eliza Daug 8 Middlesex
Wright Walter Son 6 Middlesex
Wright Sarah Daug 2 Middlesex
Sloss Mary (No Ann) Servant 16 Scholar Servant Dartford Kent.

Address: Lowfield Street, Dartford

RG09 / 467 / 65 / 21

I don't have access to 1851 Cencus at present, maybe another member can check this one out for you.

Hi Baz,

This could be Mary's birth found on IGI

Mary Jane Sloss Chr 6 May 1838 at St Margaret,Lee,Kent,England.
I also found the following Charlotte Sloss Chr 13 Sept 1840 at St.Margaret,Lee,Kent,England

Parent's to both, are James Sloss and Jane.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find her on any cencus returns, unless of course she is shown on 1851 which I don't have access to.

Thanks heaps Nanna, James & Jane had more kids than I realised - you've given me some more to research Would you be able to check for William J. Sloss (Mary's brother) who was born about 1835 in Blackheath/Lee.

Mary Jane was not on the 1841 census for the family so she may have died young and Mary recieved her name.

Could you also look for James' brother (I think), Richard, born 1805ish, was living with James in Charlton 1841. His wife was Caroline.

Thanks again Nanna

Hi Baz,
There was no sign of Richard on the 1861 Cencus, but I did find a Richard with Wife Eliza on 1871 Cencus, which could be his son, maybe Slizzy could check the 1851 Cencus again for you on this one, for Richard Senior.

Eliza Wife 26 Hampshire
Sloss Caroline Mother 55 Sussex
Wells Mary A Cousin 19 Sussex

Address: Devonshire Mews,South,Marylebone,London.

Baz, sorry I can't find any sign of Richard on 1851 census, he could have been in Ireland maybe ........ in view of his mother being with the family in 1861.I will have another search later.
