Joseph's father was listed on his marriage certificate as James Cooper, coal pit engine driver

There is a rumour that if he was underage when he enlisted then he may have changed his name/dob. If that was the case, then his father James also used Cooper at Joseph's marriage to match.
James was from Staffordshire (Stoke?)
I have had no luck finding anything about Joseph/James Cooper that would work,.... Any idea how to trace someone if such a name change did occur?
