Default Alfred Kaufman/Elizabeth Kaufman nee Crombie

Hi all,
i am new to the forum and am looking for some help i have been searching websites and record sites but to be honest,,being a motor mehanic i have not got a clue where to look or what to look for.
The problem i have is my wife needs to find her parents DOB's and marriage date for her passport app and for her own info, but they both passed on while she was young and she has no info on them but there names on her birth certificate.
Her fathers name is Herbert Alfred Kaufman and her mothers is Elizabeth Kaufman nee Crombie.
We think her mother is Scottish.
They were living in manchester when my wife was born in 1960,but this is all we know about them.
My wifes name is Carol.
Thanyou in advance for any help or advice.
Regards.
John.

I found this marriage entry which at first i thought was her parents but the surname is wrong???

Herbert A Kaufman to CLARKE Manchester vol 10e page 321 1957 June qtr.

there are also these marriage entries which you might know about or might be helpful later

shirley kaufman to COHEN Manchester Vol 10e Page 835 1959
harold kaufman to CAHM Salford vOL 10f 1302 1958 sept QTR
Brian Kaufman to BARLOW manchester vol 10e 242 1958 March qtr

Incidentally most of the Kaufmans appear to be in london area.

Names I am researching
Walker (liverpool) davidson, mccullough, mcdowell grills, wilson and thornton (ireland) wookey (somerset) houstoun (worcester and scotland), jeffcoate and iliffe (midlands) byron, bailey and edwards (cheshire and staffs)

Hi Welshlady

I was unable to access BMD's on ancestry....just wondered if the marriage was an Elizabeth CLARKE and the marriage to Herbert Kaufman was a 2nd marriage?

Obviously her maiden name of Crombie would be listed on jncgs' wifes' birth certificate....

Maybe searching for a Crombie marriage in prior years may solve the issue ( sorry i can't search...have emailed ancestry...cos i aint impressed )

Hi,
And thankyou for your time and troubles, because they died when she was very young she is not sure of the dates and does not know of any sibling as she spent her life in foster homes,so no adoption papers anywhere, she thinks her mother may have died around 62,63.
Once again thankyou for your help,i have tried finding info and can only admire those of you who can.
Regards.
John.

Lozzie, they changed the passport rules in april 07,you do now need your parents DOB's and they are rejecting applications without these,,,the passport helpline have told us to either send in the app with a note and hope and lose the fee or search evrywhere for the info to make sure the app goes through.

i think i would send for the passport with the note clearly explaining how you have looked everywhere for the infomation but cannot find anything out.

on a family history front - if your wife was fostered throughout childhood there should be some records somewhere for this time. they should have soem explanation about her background and even if they dont show any more names they would have shown when your wifes parents died i would imagine to explain how she came to be in care. i would have thought they had an address for her parents at that time etc. assuming she was in the care of manchester i would contact them

email Children's Services at csenquiries@manchester.gov.uk

explain the situation and ask if they hold any of her records. i think she is entitled to see them- possibly after counselling . i know to see adoption records etc you ahave to have this first.

Names I am researching
Walker (liverpool) davidson, mccullough, mcdowell grills, wilson and thornton (ireland) wookey (somerset) houstoun (worcester and scotland), jeffcoate and iliffe (midlands) byron, bailey and edwards (cheshire and staffs)

Hi john

I won't dispute what you have been told...I knew that they were getting really strict on passports so I went onto the website for information.

From the website : http://www.ips.gov.uk/passport/apply...born-in-uk.asp

I was born or adopted in the UK
I was born before 1983

In this case we need to see your birth or adoption certificate.
I was born on or after 1 January 1983

In this case we need your full birth or adoption certificate showing your parents’ details and evidence of one of your parents’ nationality or immigration status at the time of your birth. That is, either:
  • Your mother’s UK birth certificate, Home Office certificate of registration or naturalisation, or her passport that was valid at the time of your birth;
or
  • Your father’s UK birth certificate, Home Office certificate of registration or naturalisation, or his passport that was valid at the time of your birth and your parents’ marriage certificate.

That website has some really useful information on it...including the helpline number that you mentioned. I think that the advisor you spoke to has got their wires crossed as your wife was brn BEFORE 1983.

Maybe a phone call to your local CAB may help....as it also states that money is non-refundable for an imcomplete application.

I would also phone the helpline again and clarify the information needed....maybe you will get someone who understands all the new rules.

Good Luck with your wifes' passport application....and good luck with your research
