Can anyone please help me find the death of Thomas Brewer b.. 1832 Charle Plymouth to William Brewer and Mary Ann Cobley both of Wembury Md 20 May 1820 in Wembury.
First mention of Thomas was in the 1841 census Recorded at Charles Plymouth aged 10 yrs old with Father William (40) a labourer, Mother Mary (40) Brother William (20) and sisters Ellen (1) and Mary (5) all born In County (Devon) Next shown a record of the sailings of the ship 'Richard & Ann' January to June 1846 where he is listed as a Boy seaman aged 15 years, sailing from Plymouth to Swansea & back. It records that his previous ship was Fanny. His ticket No was 90.9.89 In the 1851 census of Charles Plymouth, Thomas is recorded aged 21 yrs, with Mother Mary Ann Brewer (46) and sister Ellen G Brewer (10) Thomas was recorded on his marraige certificate (1854) as a Mariner, serving aboard HMS Inpregnable. This was a Sailing Warship of the Line, a sister ship to HMS Victory. On the Birth Cert of his daughter Mary Jane her father is shown as 'Thomas Brewer, Seaman RN late HM Ship Nile. It is not yet known if 'late' referred to his time aboard ship, or his death. Priscilla is recorded in 1861 living in Landrake with her parents and daughter Mary Jane, Priscilla is shown as 'Sailor's wife' it might therefore be assumed Thomas was alive at that time. Priscilla re-married in 1868, we can guess therefore that Thomas might have died between 1861 & 1868 although his death is not yet established However when his daughter Mary Jane married in 1880 the cert shows Father as Stephen Brewer, Mariner, adding to the confusion. (Perhaps someone simply got Thomas' Christian name wrong when informing the registrar?) It does not state 'deceased' Any suggestions? ![]() |
