Hello
33 New St Dover St Mary the Virgin I have found a Martha in 1861, she is 1 and born in Dover her father is James 31 from Ronsey Hampshire but the mother is Louisa 27 from Canterbury, other siblings are Richard 7 born Surrey, Eliza 5 born Canterbury Liley 3 born Dover. There is also a Henry May 21 brother from same place. I also found a marriage entry Sept quarter 1852 Greenwich, Lucy Ann Elizabeth Miller to a James May, Greenwich is right near Surrey and as Richard was born there worth checking. Does'nt explain why her name is Louisa on census. |

Hello
Thanks for prompt reply. Confused there's more than one candidate for Lucy. Beware a Richard May, also with a father James, is definitely not the right candidate. The 1861 census record is right. Re. Lucy/Louisa, this is probably how the enumerator thought he heard the name! The widowed Lucy May is in the 1871 census at 3, Brook Place, Charlton, Dover, age 36, born Canterbury, RG10 Piece 106, page 40. She's also in 1881 census age 48 RG11 1000 / 80 Page 29, and in both these entries she's stated as born Canterbury. There is an online birth record for Lucy Ann Elizabeth Miller 13 Feb 1832, Greenwich, so I'm afraid the later census records suggest this isn't my correct Lucy. There's also a Lucy Mariah Tilly born 27 Sep 1834 at Canterbury. A Lucy Tiley married John Gibbons Caddick 0n 02 02 1851 at St Pancras, London, not sure if same. A Louisa Amelia May possibly married a James May at St. Geo. Southwark in Q1 1845 (FreeBMD). A Louisa James married a James May on 12 09 1859 at Portsea, and the James in my family was born in Romsey, Hampshire, although this marriage is after the birth of my grt grandmother! Lucy Hatter was born 01 Feb 1835 and baptised at Canterbury. Lucy Elizabeth Cooper was born 30 Nov 1831 and baptised at Canterbury 05 Aug 1832. Lucy Curteis Metcalfe was baptised 05 May 1834 at Canterbury Cathedral. Lucy Burchett was born 06 Aug 1835 at Canterbury. If born Canterbury was suspect, there are possible Lucy entries for Kent, suspects being Lucy Shepherd at St Mary the Virgin, Dover, Lucy Eleanor Martin at St James the Apostle, Dover and Lucy Eldridge baptised 10 Apr 1832 at Cheriton (near Folkestone). I'm not certain there's a near birth date baptism for Lucy, also not certain James and Lucy married or which is their marriage record. Difficult to unravel, as there are at least 2 possible Richard May. My grt grandmother Eliza Eleanor May was baptised 14 Dec 1864, her birth on FamilySearch website is 08 Sep 1856, baptism St Mary-The-Virgin, Dover. In FreeBMD, there's a birth Q3 1855, Eliza Eleanor May under Kensington RD. probably her birth, because Kensington RD spans Greater London, London and Middlesex. In 1881 and 1891, Eliza married to James Amos, gives her birthplace as Brompton, Middlesex, London, not Canterbury. Just joined Ancestry Aid, so I'll take this opportunity to say hello to all. |
