Thread: Moses Cohen lookup Please

G'day from OZ,
May I ask for a lookup for Moses Cohen in the British Census 1841.
I believe his original name was Moshe ha Cohen Hart. He felt the need to anglicize so he dropped haCOHEN.

The research I have done so far leads me to believe that the British census 1841 gives about eight possibilities. Only two fit the birth year of his wife Leah Benjamin 1796. Working on the possibility that they were within 10 years plus or minus of each other. One is Moses Cohen 45 years [in 1841] of City of London. The other Moses Cohen Poplar and Whitechapel. I figure that if we find Leah we have found our man.

Again I say your help is greatly appreciated and your thoughts always welcome.

On the 1851 Census this Moses is listed as a widow: and is a clothes dealer.





Living next door are Moses Cohen 74 his wife Elizabeth 72 both British Subjects and then 2 daughters Esther 46 & Frances 30.

Is it possible that Moses wife died before the 41 census? Unfortunately it doesn't five a marital status on 41. There is a "dubious death recorded in Sep 1838 in Whitechapel District for a "Lyen Cohen" which is just after the birth of Lewis

Well I don't know....... I'm not sure of any of them.
My Moshe died in 1844,
Was married1819 to Leah Benjamin b.1796.
Then if we were going by census
I would be looking for Zalig [or Solomon] he used both names.
Then Benjamin 1826, Rachel 1827, Judah 1831, Michael 1834, and Joseph his [Zalig's] siblings.
Zalig had 6 children 1 [Benjamin] was my g/grand father.
Of course by the time Zalig comes to the scene we are all Harts and the name Cohen is well in the past.

Gillian,
Thank you for your latest. The Solomon on your list is the Zalig Solomon or in some cases Solomon Zalig Hart although the ages are not correct. We believe he was most likely born 1818.
They named my gg father after the Benjamin on the list.
Fishmonger and Whitechapel also fit.

You have to remember the ages are rounded down on 1841 - so 15 could be anything between 15 and 19

Aarh, now that makes life easy, don't it.
What with the Anglo/Jew name changes.
Dealing with census takers slap dash methods and now the rounding off of ages as well.
If I had any hair I'd be pulling it out

I believe it is my mob from the list of names and birth place.
