Hi Petal,

Well he does seem to be a rather grand farmer so I should imagine he is on the 1841c but mistranscribed.
A lot of the images for Lancs are very faded and hard to read.. Ill keep looking ![]() |

Hi again, I have been working my way slowly backwards beginning with the 1901 census etc. I realise there are quite a few families with this name and have tried to be v. careful.
I am so interested in that 1809 wedding because one of the witnesses names is Thomas Cowling (so glad to know of that site). Now, on the 1861 census the family has a Nancy Cowling living with them! Wondering about this, I tracked down the death of James Heaps and the remarriage of Nancy. So it looks as though after her husband died, she married the Best Man! One area of concern is the name Anne and Nancy. On the 1861 census she is listed as being born in Darwen, Lancs and is always called Nancy and yet the marriage has her as Anne and'of this parish'. How can I sort that one out? Ideas gratefully received. Many thanks. ![]() |

Hi Little Petal,
Nancy and Nanny were commonly used as 'pet' names for girls' named Ann. If Nancy was a pet name.......then she would have used her birth name (Ann) at her marriage ceremony. To qualify as 'of this parish' one didn't have to be born there, but to have lived there for a few weeks prior to the marriage. Hope this helps with your concerns. |
