ive had alot of problems tracing people due to discrepencies on the census details... also with family members renaming themselves.

My grandads older sister died when she was 7 and he remembered "molly" turns out it was Mary F Bentley.... it took me ages to work that out!!!

Could the name be anything else ?ie fathers name be something else.

Even though he was a resident in southwark - was he born around that area do you know?

Hi Ixion,

What does the marriage certificate state for his father's occupation?

Were the witnesses family members'?

Hi Good People,
I think 'Light' has found a hot match. My surname is Powell as you probably figured. What I have not revealed is that the Male witness on the Marriage certificate is Charles John Robert Powell this must be the Charles J R Powell on 'light's' response surely?
BTW William Green (the father) is shown as an Engineer on the Marriage cert. so I assume he must have been alive then, but this would make him at least 65 perhaps?
This astonishing find also raises more questions ... "stepson"????? was his father really in attendance at the wedding? Did they divorce?
For info William Edward Green changed his name to William Edwin Green on marriage to Edith Alexandra Tunbridge at Poplar in 1892.
But at least now a 100 year old family mystery about the surname change can be laid to rest!
Anyone fancy digging deeper on William Edward Green's father William?

Post Re: 1891 Lookup request

hi

The Powell/Green family can be found at Surrey Row Christchurch in the 1871 (RG10 piece 594 folio 96 p 2) & 1881 census (RG11 0517/90-33)

Head: Charles Powell, Wife: Mary A , She being 10 years his senior.

in 1871 sons & daughters listed are
Eliza A Green age 17, Edwin W Green age 11, Elizabeth M Powell age 7, Charlotte M Powell age 5, Chas J Powell age 2. Mary & Eliza born in Middlesex, all the rest in Surrey.

In 1881 sons & daughters are
William E Powell age 21, Charlotte Powell age 16, Chas J Powell age 12.

In the IGI I found an Eliza Ann Green born nov 1854 to Jospeh & Mary Ann.

I am not sure that the absence/presence of deceased against a father in a marriage certificate is particularly accurate, especially if it is a GRO copy. (Saw a report of 9 errors in 1 marriage record at the GRO)

Hope this helps rather than confuse further.

David

P.S think I have found the Greens in 1861 in St George Southwark (RG09 piece 334 folio 1 page 1)

Head William Tunbridge Unmarried 21
Mary Ann Green Widow age 34 Sister
Eliza Ann Green age 8 Dau of sister
Edwin Willm Green age 1 Son
2 servants and visitor Mary Ann Tunbridge age 59
The page is badly damaged and on FindMyPast the transcription is very poor

Jun Quarter 1847 a Mary Ann Tunbridge married a Joseph Green in Camberwell.
