Please could someone help me find Elizabeth J Ainsworth on the 1871 and 1881 census:
She was born c1863 in Spring Gardens, Evenwood, West Auckland, Auckland, Durham. Her fathers name was James Ainsworth and he was a labourer. In 1881 (after the census) she married Francis Nelson and thus became Elizabeth J Nelson (both appear to be resident in Ripon at the time). In 1891 she is in Bilton (as Elizabeth J Nelson). In 1901 she is still in Bilton (as Elizabeth J Nelson). |

Hi Raven,
That's the one! I'm having trouble (nothing new there - lol) pinning her down too. It may be mistranscribed or something on the censuses. She is actually Elizabeth Jane Johnson Ainsworth according to her marriage certificate, details as follows: SURNAME NAME DATE AGE OCCUPATION RESIDENCE FATHER OCCUPATION Nelson Francis 10/09/1881 34 Labourer Ripon Joseph Nelson Labourer Ainsworth Elizabeth Jane Johnson 18 Servant Ripon James Ainsworth Labourer I don't have a birth certificate for her yet. |

Hi John,
In my last post I gave you Francis on the 1881 Census, living in Howgrave Yorkshire, I have found an Elizabeth J Ainsworth on the page before him but she gives her place of birth as Yorkshire... Have a look and see what you think... Eliszabeth J. Ainsworth Age: 17 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1864 Relation: Servant Gender: Female Where born: Easingwold, Yorkshire, England Civil Parish: Howgrave County/Island: Yorkshire Country: England Street address: Howgrave Occupation: General Servt (Domestic) Registration district: Ripon Sub registration district: Dishforth ED, institution, or vessel: 3 Neighbors: View others on page Household Members: Name Age Eliszabeth J. Ainsworth 17 Sarah J. Leech 27 Thomas Leech 27 Thomas Leech Charles Lumley 17 Class: RG11; Piece: 4320; Folio: 75; Page: 1; |

Your thoughts, if any please:
On the 1891 census - RG12 / 3521 / 124 / 5 Elizabeth J Nelson (mistranscribed as Wilson), nee Ainsworth, of Railway Cottages, Bilton is down as born in Durham, Evenwood. Would you agree? (Note: I found a Spring Gardens very close to Evenwood, West Auckland, Auckland, Durham) On the 1901 census - RG13 / 4051 / 73 / 2 Elizabeth Nelson, nee Ainsworth, of Bilton Junction is down as born in Yorkshire, Spring Gardens. Would you agree? Now, as you say on the 1881 census - RG11 / 4320 / 75 / 1 Elizabeth J Ainsworth (transcribed as Eliszabeth J. Ainsworth) is down as born in Yorkshire, Easingwold. (Note: On Google Maps Easingwold does appear to have a Spring St but I can't see a Spring Gardens, needless to say, there could have been a Spring Gardens their in 1863). I'm getting a little confused as to where she was really born. Will have another look for her on the 1871 census. ![]() |

Hi John,
I would agree with you on all points ie.. On 1891 Census it does say Durham, Evenwood as her place of birth, 1901 Census does say Spring Gardens, Yorkshire... Her age is also out on this.. Gives an age of 48 where in fact she would only have been 38 according to the year of birth you have for her.. I too am rather confused over this... lol will try looking again... *fingers crossed* |

Hi Raven,
Happy to see that we are all back up and running again. ![]() I'm rather confused too but am determined to get it sorted. Have to have some breakfast first to get my little grey cells working.I thought Elizabeth's age being out 9/10 years was very strange as well but Francis's age is also out by 4/5 years. ![]() Catch you later. ![]() |
