Leicestershire Agricultural Terms
Extract from A General View of the Agriculture of Leicester & Rutland

Acre= A long measuee of 4 roods or 32 yards
Aigles- icicles

Batch- the corn sent to the mill for family use
Batch Bag -bag containing the above
Batten or Bolting- a truss of straw
Beggars Needle- a weed, shepherds needls
To Belt or Burl- to shear the buttocks of a sheep
Beltings or Burlings -wool so shorn
Boar Thistle -spear thistle, carduous lanceolatus
Brush Crop= crop sown on stubble
Butty- partner in small concern
Byslings or Beastings -cows first milk after calving

Chadlock or kedlock= wild mustard, radish or rape
Camp or hogg- hoard of potatoes
Caps or hackler's- hood of sheaves or corn shocks
Chapmanry -small return on receiving money for beasts or corn
Clam or clammed- starved by hunger
Cleries -draft iron of a plough
Cockheads -weed, knapweed, also plantain
Crow-flower- crow foot
Corned -fed with grain
Cullings- refuse, out of casts of a stock

Daglocks- beltrings or burlings or wool
Dee hettle= weed, nettle hemp
Dog Fennel -weed, corn, camomile
Douk- damp

Eavins- eaves of thatches buildings
Elder- udder of a cow

Feeders- fatting cattle
Fegg- rough dead grass
To fettle adjust,- put in order
Fin= plant, onions
Finch- backed white backed or streaked cattle
Fitchet= pole cat

Galls- moist springy leaves
Garner -bin in the granary
Gaun- gallon measure also small pail or tub
Gearing- harness of a horse or ladder
Gurgeons -sort of bran
Gutter -small ditch or drain

Heart spurn- tap root
Hengorse -onions, thorny rest harrow, to hike or strike
Hillocks- ant hills, mole hills
Hooders- covering sheaves
Hubbs- naves of stocks of wheels

To kibble- grind corn perfectly
Kids -faggots

Lag -shake in a timber
Lamb hogs -yearling sheep before shearing
Lap love- corn bind weed, convulvulos
Lay -for cattle hired pasture

Muck- compost of dung and straw

Nag =a saddle horse

Pad -a traced path

Apololgies peeps..............checked this thread this afternoon and found it had the agricultural terms but not the meanings. Not quite sure what happened there............still.....should be ok now.......
