Oh slizzy it's been an ongoing saga for some time now.............lol One of my contacts sent me all the details about a coin minted by an ancestor on Mums side thats now in the British Museum. Seems that this rellie was a 'moneyer' to King Offa and respected so well that the King let him mint his own coin. He couldn't spend it, it had no value like that just the prestige I suppose. Then there's the little tale about one of our lot (also on Mums side) who used to brag that he had a load of gold coins buried in his garden. Well lo and behold, the cottage caught fire, the coins were found (rellie long deceased) but there was quite a family dispute as to who they belonged to. So, they ended up as Treasure Trove.............lol
Then.......trying to trace some of Mums lot who went to Ireland I came across one of them just by googling..........seems he'd changed his name around but kept his surname as a sort of middle name. From what I gather the husband took the wife's name on marriage in order to keep the land the wife's family owned. Thats about it in a nutshell really slizzy. No as exciting when I see it in black and white but it was fun at the time when I first found out. Now I'm currently trawling Bedford Gaol and finding a lot of people who just 'might' be mine.....................lol So, two sides to every coin (excuse the pun) |

That's all so interesting and exciting Petal. I've found nothing to match it in my ancestry.
You must have been thrilled when you found these things out ![]() I would have been screaming with glee. Your family history makes mine seem very dull. I am investigating one link however, where my gggrandfather was possibly in Notts gaol but as yet I've not got very far. Also there's another family story/myth (who knows) that an ancestor of my mother's was the son of the local gentry, but disowned for marrying beneath him! but that's as exciting as mine gets so far. |

Well looking back at my lot on Mums side they all seemed quite affluent, then one of them married a village girl (start of Mum's line) and they seemed to be the poor side of the family from then on. One was in the workhouse for a while poor soul, one chap went bankrupt.
Then on the better off side of that family one of them was a 'hit and run' driver. On his way back from the golf club he ran over a cyclist, cyclist died, driver didn't stop. Can't find any prison records for him but his dad was a JP ! Did he pull a few strings I wonder ? |

Crikey Mollie that's going back a bit.............lol I think it all started with someone somewhere saying that my lot came from Cornwall originally so I tried to find out looking at variants etc. Up came Penreath as a possible and then along came Dolly. Such a fascinating character..........oh how I wanted her in my tree.................lol Unfortunately, no proof so I could only dream. I had a feeling I put something about her on the History thread but that may have been on the old site.............not sure, but if you google her name she'll be there..............lol
