What do the initials MS stand for under the 'occupation' section of a census ?
I assume FS stands for Female Servant ...........is that right in which case MS could be Male Servant ............is this right or am I barking up the wrong tree ? |

Hi Mary,
Yes, you are right. Taken from the 1841 census:- All domestic servants may be entered as "MS" for male servants and "FS" for female servants, without statement of their particular duties, as whether Butler, groom, gardener, housekeeper, cook etc. Later census' distiquished the jobs more. |
