On a lot of my census's some members of my family are marked as 'disabled' yet on other census they are shown as working. What did this term 'disabled' actually mean ?
Didn't think it would be Unemployed as I found some with N/E against them -presuming that to mean 'not employed' |

Hello Petal,
I have done a little searching for you but all meanings of the word disabled for the Census all mean the same from what I can see. This is what I found for Census and their meanings.......................................... .................................................. ....... HELP - Census Records: Household Record Disability: This field indicates if the individual had a disability. (1) Disabled person (2) A person with a visual, hearing, physical or mental handicap that may hinder him or her from performing certain activities of daily living efficiently was defined as a disabled person. Disabilities have varying degrees of severity. See disability. Disability (3) In the census questionnaire, respondents were asked to indicate whether or not there were any people with serious visual, hearing, physical or mental disabilities in the household. The seriousness of the disability was not clearly defined. Rather, the respondent’s perceptions of seriousness were relied on. Hope this helps Marion |

Hi Mary
In 1851, 1861 & 1871 2 categories of disability were recorded, blind and deaf-and-dumb, in 1881 2 more were added, imbecile or idiot and lunatic, 1901 added feeble minded. Take your pick! (then as now I expect it was much more difficult for those with a disability to obtain employment) Gillian Last edited by gillian; 31-07-2007 at 02:42 PM. |
