Hmm sounds good!

But will it mean that Fam His BMD's will take a back seat and wait longer?!?!

I remember a few years ago that people researching in Sheffield were complaining.....they were paying full price for certificates, that by the dates were OBviously for fam his research, but these certs were placed at the bottom of the pile...it would take anything from 5 - 12 weeks to receive a cert All applications for "newish" certificates took priority!

At that time the debate was...IF we were paying HALF price then it wouldnt be so bad....but we were paying the SAME price as people wanting "current" certificates

I'm all in favour of a reduction in the cost of certificates for research....but at the expense of timescales ?!?!? unsure

Sorry Loz, in my haste I didn't explain what exactly the petition was asking for, here's a quote.

"in the 1990s allowing easier and cheaper access to birth
marrige and death certificates was looked into i believe by the government and nothing happened. So can access not be allowed to these certificates on the internet say through a voucher system for say 50 pence per view. At the moment if you want one piece of information you have to spend £7 so if you had 6 possibles in a line of family history research it would cost £42! quite an expense whereas under the idea mentioned it would cost £3 Big difference, if this idea came to pass not only would it be of enormous help to family history researchers worldwide but it would generate a good deal of income for the treasury"

With the three year Digitisation of Vital Events ( DoVE ) nearing completion I will be happy having improved information on the certificates as long as the charge isn't increased. If the price was £3 people would probably order twice as many. I know I would.

I'm all for anything that cuts the costs. Been lucky so far as other contacts that have proved to be rellies have already had copies and let me have some but there's bound to come a time when I need to dig deep and my purse aint that big.

I agree with Mary on keeping costs down at any cost, and if that means waiting a wee bit longer for my certs I'll live with that.
After all, the requests for more current certs are needed for Passport applications, Execution of wills etc. and in the scheme of things these are more urgent.

Ahh yes that sounds a brilliant idea, Slizzy!

Easier and quicker access! As I said before, cost cutting yes...but if it was to wait for 3 months for a cert...think I'd rather pay full The timescales the GRO are currently delivering are really good.

Thank you Slizzy

I will not be voting on this one. The new system is meant to make obtaining the certificates a lot quicker. One of the worries with people about them going on-line is that it will be like Scotlands people. The credits go down very quickly and I personally like the official looking coloured certificates. I have quite a few Scotish ones printed off but they get filed together in one sleeve. I never bother sending off for the actual certificates because these work out even more expensive. The ones from GRO get filed back to back to I can see them.
I will continue with my pretty system
