Best of luck with your search Pauline. As Mollie said, the present landlord maybe managing the pub for a brewery, therfore you probably would be better to try contacting local breweries, or speaking to local folk. I hope you get a reply from someone, you deserve it for your determination. Keep at it ...... something will unfurl eventually.

Good morning slizzy, thank you for those kind words. Yes I'm determined not to be beaten. I have seen a few public houses on the internet along with the write up of the history, these were in the Macclesfield area, but nothing for the George and dragon, hopefully someone will have info...

I have just had an email back from the Cheshire Archives today, still trying to get my brain into gear. This is the email I got back:-

Dear Pauline
Thank you for your email of 13 June.
I searched our online photographic archive (Picture Cheshire at: www.cheshire.gov.uk/recordoffice/home.htm ) for any pictures of Hurdsfield but found none. I have also searched our indexes and catalogues but could find no reference to the George and Dragon.
The George and Dagon is listed in A J Macgregor's "The Alehouses and Alehouse keepers of Cheshire 1628-1828". According to Macgregor it had formerly been called the Nags Head.. Between 1784 and 1828 there were only 2 landlords David Clarke (1784-1816) and John Pogmore (1816-1828). You yourself have information about licensees in the 19th century. More could be found in the censuses and from Trade directories. The 1891 Return of Licensed Premises in Cheshire states that the owner at that time was a Mr Pogmore of Warwick, the lessee was F W Maurice, brewer of Macclesfield and the licensee was a widow named Dinah Cromblehulme who resided on the premises. It was described as "an old house"
It should also be possible to locate the pub on Ordnance Survey maps dating from the 1st edition of 1875. It should also show up on the tithe map for Hurdsfield dating from 1849. Both of these can be viewed online at: http://maps.cheshire.gov.uk/tithemaps/ our new online historic mapping facility.
I hope the above will be of interest.
Yours sincerely

It's left me kinda confused cos I'm not sure now where my ancester Jonathan Hollinshead fits into these dates, unless Dinah Cromblehulme resided on the premises after my gt gt grandfather died in 1886. Would be grateful for any help or feed back,
Imagine trying to say Dinah's surname after a few beers

Thanks.
