Default Travelling Hughes

Well, I've discovered that I have gypsy ancestors in my family. It turns out that my great-grandfather, Noah Hughes, was a gypsy. He was born in a field in Devon when the river that ran along the bottom of the field was in flood, and thats why his parents called him Noah!
I don't know anything about his parents, but I do know that some Hughes and Penfolds were living on Chimney Down Moor in Devon.
Noah settled in Tiverton when he married and had his first family. Unfortunately his first family all died, and my gran was his daughter from his second marriage.

Paulettewinter, those names don't ring any bells to me, but I will ask some family members if they know. The only name I know for certain is Hughes, and I know they had something to do with the Penfolds as well.
My great grandfather was a gypsy through and through but he settled permanently in Tiverton in Devon. His brother, Leonard settled for good too with his wife Charlotte. They lived in Cove in Devon.
I will ask my Aunt if she knows any of those names.

Hi T.Lambert thanks for the info, but I don't think your Noah is my Noah. My Noah was born in 1859 and was only married twice, once to Susan Jones, and then after her death to my great gran, Mary-Ann Hackworthy.
Maybe your Noah is related to my Hughes family very distantly? I know there is a lot of confusion over the Hughes family as to which Noah belongs where. There are a lot of 'em!
It would be nice to think we're related somehow. I hope this helps.

Sally

What a shame, I thought he might have been the same person, I know what you mean about theres alot of Huges Matilda and Noah that i have had about 15 children. and Noah was known as Sandy Cooper.

Default For the attention of T. Lambert.

I think this website might help you with locating a Cooper family.
www.romanygenes.webeden.co.uk

If it's the same Cooper family I'm thinking about, then my Hughes family knew them when they lived in the New Forest, or to be precise the Nevi Wesh!
The website has helped me a heck of a lot, and I've got this funny feeling that they've actually got photos of Sandy Cooper and his family, too.
Anyway, good luck with it, Sally
