Well i reckon we all have a Gipsy Rose Lee in our family, or if not , we want one.
Well far be it from me to say, Yes i got the one My Stepmum is the grandaughter of the Gypsy Rose Lee. What has always baffled me is the fact that is not her true name. My dad Is married To The grand Daughter of Gypsy Rose Lee, He wears the wedding ring round his neck of her sister. Florence I should be telling this in my Biography My Stepmum travelled the country with her Grandma, up and down the roads . If you look at the census, from the time Alice Coe was born the family were in a different place . Well i gotta stop there My Story goes pair Shaped else Got loads to tell |

Hello Shan
I've got Gypsy Rose Lee's too, 9 infact, although 3 are Rosetta Lee's! My claim to fame is, my 1st cousin, 4 times removed was Royalty. Her name was Urania Lee, her parents were Abraham Lee (my ggg-greatuncle) and Mary Smith. Mary was also known as Dark Sarah, Queen of the Devils Dyke. When Sarah died, the title went to her eldest child Urania Lee 06/06/1851-28/04/1933. Urania was married to Levi Boswell. There is a lot of infomation on the internet about her. I even managed to download a short film of her funeral from the Pathe site. She died and was buried in Farnbrough, Kent. Her funeral was huge, estimates say over 15,000 people attended, although I think that is a bit of an exaggeration. I do know that my Nan went, and so did Mum's cousin, who will be 90 next month, and can remember it well. In various writings about her, people called her 'Gypsy Rose Lee' as she was a fortune teller. She fortold the death of the King, and the exact day and time of her own death. Sandra ps, Shan, It's been hot here in Aldershot today, what was the weather like in Ash? lol |

Hello. My Gt, Gt, Grandfather (Joseph RICHARDS) married a Mary ANN LEE in around 1867. They clearly moved around a lot and it's difficult to find the marriage records (despite 10 years of looking).
The reason for writing, is that I today found out that Mary Ann LEE was a gypsy. I also found out that her daughter (Sarah LEE) was a renowned fortune teller in York. She married a chap called 'Eli' Boswell. After reading your post, and the mention of gyspys, and LEE, the names Mary and Sarah, and a marriage to a 'Levi' Boswell, I wondered if we might be linked in some way?? Could you tell me more, or perhaps provide other names of siblings and geography? I find it all very interesting. |

My Lee's were all from Kent and Essex (East London), my lot didn't actually travel north.
Lee and Boswell are a couple of the most common gypsy names, there are various sites that maybe able to help you more. The main one is The Romany and Traveller family history society, I have been a member for several years and have found a few 'cousins' thought them. Good luck with all your research. Hi there, I understand that there may be a Gypsy Rose Lee in my family and would appreciate any help in tracing her ancestry.
My Mum has told me that her mother's grandmother or great grandmother may have been the original Gypsy Rose Lee. My mother and her family are originally from London and I understand that a branch of the family is from Kent. My great great grandmother married a Lee but we have been unable to trace any further back on the Lee side of the family. I would be grateful for any help to try and trace this side of my family, particulary from anyone with the name Wilson who may have similar links (a long shot, I know!), or of the names Nash, Nott, Wendon or Baker (the married names of some of my great-aunts). Thanks in anticipation Tamsin ![]() |
