    Default Emma Cherry b 1860

Emma Cherry born 1860 in Spennymoor, county Durham was the daughter of Robert Cherry (b1823) and Ann Emery (b1819). On the 1861 census, they are living in Whitworth Durham on 28 Silver St.

I can't find her in 1871. Did she die? (she is not with mom and dad)

Or did she marry in 9/1878 in South Shields to either William Smith or John Vinton?

Those are my guesses from this side of the pond. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Dave

    Hello Dave,

Emma is a mystery, as although she appears on the 1861 census aged 6 months (born Spennymoor) there doesn't seem to be any other records for her.

The 1861 census was taken on the 8th April, therefore Emma would have been born Oct/Nov 1860, the registration district for Spennymoor was Auckland, I cannot find a birth ref in the GRO index for either last qrt 1860 or first qrt 1861.

Thanks Slizzy. I got a feeling I have more mysteries to come. Overlooking she might not have been born, did she get married? :-)

    Dave,

It's past my bedtime (2.22am in UK), but I will try and find something tomorrow. I did do a cursory search for Emma as a married woman but didn't find anything, maybe with more time I can unearth something. Fingers crossed! In the meantime another member may look at your thread and be able to help.

Slizzy you are such the night owl! I did a search on FreeBMD and came up with the two possibilities that fit the time frame (William Smith or John Vinton).

Dave Hi, Do you have a copy of the marriage cert as it would confirm both parties Fathers names and their professions.

    Marriages Sep 1878 CherryEmmaS. Shields10a780

Robert Cherry was a Coal Miner in 1861 and still a Coal Miner in 1881 this time living in Chester Moor which was the road or street name for the 1881 Census..If this was your Emma who married in 1878 maybe the address would be the same as her parents address for 1881? Fathers profession on the marriage certificate should read Coal Miner..

Thanks Lady Marion. All I have is what I found on FreeBMD and it had Emma Cherry and another woman and the two men I have mention. I am still a newbie when it comes to research and newer still where to find England's records on the internet. If there are other places I can look (besides Ancestry and Familysearch as well as Freecen and FreeBMD) please let me know. Thanks, Dave - southern NJ USA.

    Hi Dave,

I'm still trying to sort out the Cherry family! Am I correct in thinking Ann married Robert in 1858, and therefore of the children on the 1861 census, Thomas and William were Ann's, and Joseph was Robert's son to his first wife, Elizabeth? Were James and Alice, Robert and Elizabeth's children?

I need to get my head around the family, so if you can confirm or otherwise the above it would help. I suspect Emma was not born a Cherry, as it's odd there's no birth registration, no death and so far as I can establish no marriage (not in the name Cherry). That said, it's necessary to do more research on the possible marriage you mention - which I'll look at later.

A possible death for Emma, but it's in Durham not Auckland.

Slizzy, I am at work at the moment and I don't have my notes in fron of me. I do have my external hard drive with me with some of the notes. I have made contact with a researcher from a different forum and we have been exchanging info. From his notes, Robert Cherry married three times (I had originally thought 4 times). Robert married first Elizabeth Lovely (m 17 Jan 1848, Auckland Durham) and had Joseph, James and Alice. robert married second Ann Emery (Mar 1858 Stockton see FreeBMD records) and had Emma, Isabella and Alexander. Robert married third Mary White (Sep 1875 Newcastle on Tyne, see FreeBMD records) and had Thomas and Mary Ann.

My father in law is descended from Robert's eldest son Joseph from his first wife Elizabeth.
