I am researching my family through my father's side. They were from the Dumfries-shire area of Scotland - Canonbie, Hawick, Langholm and Westerkirk. My great grandfather John Maxwell married Margaret Elder in Canonbie. Her father Alexander - known as Sandy - was the proprietor of The Cross Keys in Canonbie. Before that he was a mail coach driver. If anyone can help take this family back further than John Maxwell and Helen/Nelly Murray in the 1700s I would be most grateful.
