    Default Lindsays County Down

I am seeking information about my Grandfather, William Lindsay, born in Bangor (County Down), Ireland in 1891. He emigrated to the U.S. (Wash. D.C.) in 1923. His address in Bangor, at the time he emigrated, was 8 Beatrice Rd. My Grandmother's name was Ellen, or Eleanor, (Niblock) Lindsay. She was born in Donaghadee in 1894. My grandparents were married in Bangor on June 3, 1912. Four children accompanied them. My Grandfather was a plasterer and traveled alone several times to the U.S between 1911 and 1920 to seek work. He served in the (Ulster) Irish Army during WWI and was wounded. My Great Grandfather, James Lindsay and Great Grandmother, Elizabeth (Lightbody) Lindsay emigrated with them. I am told that my great grandparents might have operated a grocery or fruit store in Bangor at one time. I am hoping that there may be family remaining somewhere in Ireland. Please contact me if you have any information on the Lindsays, Niblocks, or Lightbodys.

    Dear Scotty,

Thank you for your reply. I will be doing some checking up on this to see if these are my great grandparents. I'm not sure of the year that my great grandfather was born. The only tool I have to use right now is the 1930 U.S. Census for Wash. D.C. The age listed for my great grandfather is hard to read. It looks like 60, but could be 68. If it is 60, then marriage in 1883 would have made him 13 (a little young?). If it is 68, then he would have been 21 which would fit better. How did you come across this information? Thanks again for taking the time to contact me. This gives me something to work on as I have been running into a lot of brick walls with my research!

You'll find Wm Lindsay, his parents and siblings in the 1901 census at 87 Ballymagee, Bangor, Co Down. In 1911, some of the family are at 8 Beatrice Rd, Bangor. Some grandchildren have appeared by then. Couldn't see the Niblocks.

James Lindsay married Elizabeth Lightbody 19 Aug 1883 at St Annes, Belfast. Their fathers were William Lindsay and John Lightbody. Websites of interest are, PRONI, The Ulster Covenant, Ross Davies County Down, Emerald Ancestors. The Ulster Historical Foundation lists your ancestor's marriage in 1883. The Family Search Org lists John Lightbody of Bangor who married in 1846. A possible relative found in the 1901 census at 3 Main Street, Bangor, was John Lightbody, grocer, aged 56.

    HI,
My g.grandparents were Sarah Lindsay and William McTear. They must have married around 1860 as their eldest child was born 1864.
I cannot find a marriage for them, so cant find their parent's names either. Totally stuck.

I was told by a relative that the McTears were from Ballywalter, but their children were baptised in 1st Presbyterian in Bangor.
The Lindsays she said were from Conlig, and something to do with the Courtaulds linen company....

I wonder if these Lindsays might be the same family, but of course it is probably a common name.

    Pen
