Default Eva CAMPBELL (m John SHARPE?)

I am looking for information about my great aunt Eva CAMPBELL (b. 21 Aug 1886 in Ballynahinch, Co Down, N. Ireland) daughter of John CAMPBELL and Ellen McCARTHY. It is possible she married John SHARPE on 21 June 1914 at St Aidan's Church in Belfast. After that I can find no further information on either of them. I have checked emigration lists and CWGC casualty lists for John. I can find no children either. Any information or leads welcome. Thanks, Leona

    * Is this your Eva (with her family) in the 1901 census? Looks like they moved from Co Down to Belfast sometime after 1894.

    And in 1911:

The marriage between Eva Campbell & John Sharpe is registered in Belfast April – June 1914 Volume 1, page 308. You can order a photocopy of that cert from GRO Roscommon for €4, provided you quote the place, year, quarter, volume & page number, and they don’t have to do any searching. The cert should give Eva’s address, her father’s name and occupation which should at least confirm whether or not you have the correct marriage for her. The General Register Office Ireland :: An tSeirbhs um Chlr Sibhialta

Using John Sharpe's address on his marriage cert, and the annual Belfast Street Directories, you may be able to trace how long the couple stayed in Belfast..

John Campbell died 1.10.1918 and is buried in Belfast City cemetery grave M1 85.

    Hi Leona

I was just checking out your post. I have been putting together a fair bit of information on McCarthys of County Down in 19th Century, and I have some info on John Campbell & Ellen McCarthy (daughter of William Mc & Ann Martin). The John Campbell & Essie, in 1901 & 1911 at Roseleigh St Clifton, are John Campbell & Esther Skelly, who married on 27/11/1888. Esther's son with surname Skelly lived with them in 1911. He also lived with them in 1901 but his surname was recorded as Campbell. Eva was born prior to marriage as well, so could also be to Esther's first husband ( or unwed).

John Campbell & Ellen McCarthy married on 17 June 1873 at Magherahamlet, and Ellen stated she was 19 yo, although her father or mother were not a witnesses, which is usually the case when bride is under 21.

I was wondering if you were a descendant of John & Ellen, as you refer to Eva as Aunty. I do not have any details on John & Ellen's descendants at this stage, and would love to have any details you may have. Ellen's father was the son of Henry Mc & Ellen Standfield. I have constructed a fair bit of their family details, and I think my 4th Great Grandfather, Richard McCarthy, may have been Henry's brother. I am in the process of trying to prove it at the moment.

    Anyway, hope this info helps.

Hi Karen - apologies for not replying sooner but we were away on our holidays.
I am flabbergasted at last to find a link to Ellen McCarthy! I am her great grand-daughter - and I have a portrait of her! Here are the details I have for her just to double-check it is the same person......
    - born abt 1854/56 daughter of William McCarthy and Anne Martin and was second of 7 children - Henry, Ellen, Andrew, James, Joseph, Samuel Frackleton and Anna. She married John Campbell in Magherahamlet Church In The Parish Of Magherahamlet, District Of Downpatrick, Co Down on 17 June 1873. They had 8 children before she died at the age of just 33 of typhoid fever on 7 Sept 1888 at The Square, High St, Ballynahinch. John remarried Essie Skelly and had a further 5 children. William McCarthy died in Dunbeg on 18 March 1895. I found their house - and was kindly allowed inside by the owners - we now keep in touch. In the roof space they showed me a beam with the name William McCarthy and the date of construction - gave me goosebumps!
I would be DELIGHTED to get further information going backwards from William, father Henry, as would my cousins.
If we are related then I'll send you some photos/scans of what I have.
Looking forward to hearing from you!

    Hi Leona

Great to hear from you ! I have gone over some of the info you have sent and we definately have the same person. Please drop me a line at mishapee2@yahoo.com.au so we can compare notes. I have the following children for William Mc & Ann Martin, James (mgd Isabella Hicks) Andrew (mgd Elizabeth Ann Dawson) William (mgd Mary Ann Reid) Anna No Spouse, Henry (mgd Bessie McDowell), I do not have Samuel. I do not have any of their baptism details, only marriage records. I have William's baptism to Henry McCarthy & Ellen Standfield, 1819, Hillsborough COI. I have 8 siblings for William and some of their family details. I am still researching trying to link Henry McCarthy to my ancestor Richard McCarthy. Both Henry and Richard were living at Taughblane when having their children. They both appear on the Freeholders List as McCarty at Toghblane. It would be great to exchange info. How exciting about being shown through William's house and seeing the beam with his name on it..those are the things I dream of..

    Cheers for now

    Karen McCarthy
