    Default Churchill

I'm researching Stephen Churchill born 1837 in Wareham Lady St.Marys, parents William and Mary. In the 1851 census Stephen and brothers Charles and William are in Wareham Workhouse described as orphans but I'm pretty sure I found Mary still alive but widowed with daughters and son Joseph. If anyone is searching Churchills I'd like to hear from you. Or if anyone can throw any light onto why Mary put three of her sons in the Workhouse?

    Hi Chrissa

I am also researching a Stephen Churchill from Wareham. I have just found him in my tree and not 100% sure. I was wondering if you could help us confirm. He would be my GGG Grandfather if I can validate the link.

I have a Margaret Jane Churchill (b 1869) who on the 1881 census is shown living both with her Grandmother Ann Hixon and also with her parents - Stephen and Eliza.

The only Churchill-Hixon marriage I can find is Stephen abd Eliza Hixon.

Does that tie with you records?

There seems to be a large Churchill family in the Wareham area.

If you any information, I'd love to hear it.

    Many thanks

    Hi Suey

I believe there is a link but I'm at my daughters just now and my information is at home!

Lucy - Stephen had three children, Margaret Jane, Mary Ann and a son whose name escapes me. In 1851 Stephen was in Wareham Workhouse with his brothers, he wasn't an orphan as the census states, his mother was still alive and kept the girls with her. The workhouse still stands but now converted to flats. Aged 18 he was an Able Seaman on board a ship called 'Friend'. Ten years later he was a miner in Co.Durham - I am told he had a pierced ear - wonder how that went down with the miners?

    Hi,

Can't help with the missing brothers, but there is info. on William and Mary on the Dorset OPC site:

William Churchill b. 1805 son of William Churchill and Jane Jewer (m.1799). Died 1850.

Mary Ann(e) Presley/Pressley/Priestly b.1805 (East Lulworth) daughter of Joseph and Ann Priestly. Died 1862.

    Married 21/09/1824

You probably have all this, but perhaps it will help?

Is this Stephen's brother William in 1881?
